Seasons are so damn short, man.

Wasn't crazy about this episode. Had high hopes because the gang fucking around with a pride parade sounds hysterical. But was mostly a bunch of nothing...

Ending really left me wanting more. If they were gonna go the dramatic route, why not have his father stick around for the whole thing? Unless they're setting it up for Frank to be gay? Lol who the fuck knows.

Rest of the season was good at least.

I was really missing Howerton in the last stretch of the season there.

It was...way more dramatic than I would have expected. With that said, it's an episode that got me pretty hard. I teared up, which surprised me in itself.

I've seen super split opinions on it, and I think it might be something that only clicks with you if you're LGBT and can relate to it. I'm not sure how much I'd have liked it if I wasn't gay.

Yeah I expected the audience to be split on it too. Being gay myself I found it to be very moving. I really didn't expect that to be where the episode went.

Here's my personal theory on the episode:

Mac set up the whole episode as a big joke: he had to keep up the lie with his father, he was originally planned to dance flamboyantly on the parade float, yet at the end he rejected all of that and expressed his sexuality the way he saw it. Luther rejects him, Frank supports him. My theory is that this is a metaphor for the way Rob McElhenney views Mac's character on the show. Mac's homosexuality has been used as a joke for a long time now, and McElhenney (as a huge supporter of LGBT rights) might have remorse over it. He doesn't want to keep Mac being a butt monkey for gay jokes because it's offensive to gays everywhere, so he ends the season showing Mac in a dramatic light, literally crying into a woman's arms. McElhenney knew what he was doing, which is why Luther leaves halfway through and Frank stays. Luther represents viewers that expected a cheap joke at the expense of gay people, and are angry with the show itself. Frank represents dedicated fans that are willing to truly understand McElhenney's motivations in making this episode and can appreciate it.

This is fairly similar to how Glenn Howerton has stated regret in using the "R-word" as a joke for mentally deficient people, and why they choose to censor it now (yet allow F-bombs regularly). The show has been going strong for thirteen years now, the entire cast has matured

This is it, exactly.

As a Sunny fan I guess I can say I appreciate it and applaud McElhenney for taking the swing he did with the episode. But will this go down as one of my favorite episodes? Not exactly.

That ending was something alright, but it wasnt Sunny.

That interpretive dance felt almost too good for Always Sunny. That was incredibly impressive.

As for what meaning it had, or any message, I have no idea. But the performance alone was quite impressive.

I think my main issue was given past history with dances I was expecting something a la the high school reunion where it comes back to reality and the dance is going terribly and everyone is appalled, so much so that me waiting for it and expecting it to happen kind of took me out of the moment.

It was moving on the rewatch though where I had that expectation removed

I can respect this sentiment, and I'm almost in the same boat as well even as a gay man. It's a great, moving performance but I don't watch Always Sunny to be moved.

I've always had that sentiment about sitcoms doing "very special" episodes though, like the episode of Fresh Prince with Will's biological father. Everyone loves it but I really don't.

That... might have just been the most human and 3-dimensional Mac has ever been on the show. Like almost uncharacteristically so, since they've never been able to do much with his character besides "gay" and "likes karate" stuff. I guess Dennis being gone meant that they were finally able to develop Mac more.

That being said, still a lame season of a show that should have ended like 3 seasons ago, and that's being generous/ignoring the flanderization and weak plot lines (since if they're funny, then no biggie. But ever since season 11 they haven't been funny to me either)

This season alone had 3 episodes that literally alienates 95% of the audience that doesn't:

A) care about baseball shit

B) care about american lemonball crap (and they made that a 2-parter!)

C) want to watch an unfunny home alone "parody" that's literally in the same quality as those "epic movie" type garbage movies that were infesting theaters a few years back.

Just got around to watching it. Holy shit, that was way too beautiful for Always Sunny.

The music for that scene was Sigur Ros. That's pretty crazy because Sigur are really protective of their music. Apparently the cast had to give Sigur and exact description of what the plan for the episode was, and when they did, Sigur signed off on it immediately

So tonight I rewatched it. I dunno... its not conventional Sunny, but it is Sunny, and it might just be one of the best episodes of TV yet.

It wasnt what I as expecting. But when watching it again and knowing the payoff, its amazing how well constructed and concise the episode is for packing as much quality as it can in 21 minutes, and the effort Rob put into the ending is ridiculous, and only proves what a labor of love this show is for him.

Its Robs show, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. He wrote the episode. Rob wanted to do something that no one expected, and he certainly succeeded.

The episode is not about Max being gay. Its about Rob proving he can be taken seriously as an actor and producer. He obviously cares for and respects DeVito a lot, and appreciates his involvement in the show. Looks up to as a father figure, perhaps even.

Rob knew he could do this episode and it would divide the hell out of the fan base, but it doesnt matter. He can always be proud of this episode.

what I like is that it really doesn't matter anymore if Luther accepts him or not, and it was highly unlikely in the first place

what matters is that Mac has come to accept himself and it seems Frank has as well (and Frank was more of a father to Mac than Luther ever was)
