In the show, Tyrion said he was in charge of the drains and cisterns in Casterley Rock and that water never flowed better. So if I were a commoner, then I'd pick him.

Tyrion no contest.

Ned is close but he's too honorable to do what's good since he will only do what's right.

Jon Snow would probably be the most fair and care the most about commoners' problems, but I feel like his heroic and self-sacrificing nature would get us all killed eventually.

I'll go with Tyrion.

For all that Tywin is a despicable piece of shit, he is by far the best ruler. The only reason you might not want him is because it's just going to be a massive shitshow after he dies because Cersei and Jamie are terrible rulers.

Stannis would be a good King if he wasn't a religious nutjob burning everyone at the stake for better weather. As far as the five kings, I don't see how Renly wouldn't have been a good King. Rob would have been ok also except he wouldn't have been the best at understanding and avoiding political espionage, and the other two were terrible anyway.

The show doesn't emphasize it as much as the book, but Renly is a lot of show and not much substance. Holding a tournament and a feast when he could have marched on King's Landing and taken the throne weeks/months if he'd just headed straight there. Not even doing enough to consummate his marriage to cement the alliance. There's a reason you don't really hear much about what he'd do as king; he likes the idea of it but doesn't really know what to do with it.

Robb would be a terrible king for the same reason Ned would be. They're bad at politics.

Stannis isn't a religious nutjob, he caters to the Lord of Light because he gets results.

I thought Renly didn't march on King's Landing immediately intentionally. With the Reach on his side he was already withholding supply to the city, fueling resentment among the smallfolk against the ruling Lannisters, and he was also giving the Starks and Lannisters time to burn each other out in the Riverlands.

Maybe I'm being colored by the book - though this was back when there was very little difference between the two - but I don't remember any indication of that. Pretty much everyone, Renly included, knew that King's Landing was basically defenseless against his army. Stalling only gave Tywin time to figure out what to do.

I think Jon is the most virtuous. People born into birthright tend to be pricks, or otherwise are ignorant to the plights of the masses.

Jon was raised by a very fair and noble house, but was also an outsider, and his birthright hidden from him. This necessarily humbled him relative to the rest of Westerosi elite. He willingly chose an option of duty and service most only choose out of necessity after committing crimes. He suffered through a hard path and became a natural leader as a result of those experiences.

None of his current standing is by choice. He does not seek power, and if anything, shirks it. He has all the good virtues and qualities of Ned, with the addition of having the fire of Targaryen blood. In other words, he is a more assertive Stark, or a more tempered Targaryen (depending on your point of view). It's the perfect blend of traits and why the series is "A song of ice and fire." He is the only logical ruler of Westeros.

I'm basing this on the book too. Tywin utterly fails in his family life, but he is the most competent ruler by far. Maybe even moreso in the book due to the implication that he set up Robb marrying the wrong girl.

Tyrion. He's the only one that is both decent and capable. All the guys that are unambiguously 'good' like Ned or Jon are also catastrophically naive and stupid. All the guys that are super clever, like Tywin and Stannis, are also pretty morally grey at best. Tyrion seems like the best compromise.

Maybe I'm being colored by the book - though this was back when there was very little difference between the two - but I don't remember any indication of that. Pretty much everyone, Renly included, knew that King's Landing was basically defenseless against his army. Stalling only gave Tywin time to figure out what to do.

So I went and re-checked the book out of curiosity, and it turns out that its actually Tyrion who muses on Renly's march - noting that Renly's slow pace was allowing the Lannisters and Starks to waste their energy on each other which would give Renly the opportunity to deal with whoever remained. Tyrion does all this while observing the poor conditions in King's Landing due to the supply roads being closed in the Riverlands and the Reach. Cersei also makes similar comments that Renly's pace is allowing him to gather a pretty massive amount of strength before he marches on the city.

It's not outright stated by anyone in Renly's camp that starving King's Landing and letting the Lannisters and Starks wear themselves out is his specific intent, but the consequences of his pace are made pretty clear.
