I just played the beta yesterday for about 5-6 hours and I actually found it enjoyable. It's... fallout. I was afraid that is was going to be Ark: Post apocalypse edition, but it's totally not. If you had the fear that it was going to be just a survival game, you can rest your worries, because it's not. The game has survival elements, but that's not all it is.

During much of my session, I actually forgot that it was online. Exploring interior cells, getting side tracked by a structure out in the wilderness, getting shot at by super mutants... Most everything I experienced felt like your classic first person fallout. There's even a main story quest line, and plenty of side quests.

The biggest difference between this game and single player fallout games is the lack of human NPCs. However, given the context of the game, it kind of makes sense. The game world takes place only 25 years after the bombs dropped, so human settlers haven't had enough time to start rebuilding society in a meaningful way.

This is actually the premise behind the main quest line. You're tasked with jump starting society again. Your first task is to find the overseer of vault 76, who left the vault first. You're suppose to track her down, and on your way you find holotapes that she's left behind, discussing a small pack of survivors who call themselves the responders (they remind me of an early version of the minute men). The story branches out from there.

The game puts emphasis on the exploration aspect of fallout, which was always my favorite part of the series. I would get lost for hours just exploring buildings, finding loot and killing ferals. If you're Fallout junkie who finds the most enjoyment from shootin' lootin' and explorin', then I think you'll like it. If dialog wheels was your thing, then you might want to keep looking.

I'm sure it's great until xXxBoobieInspectorxXx runs around the corner screaming slurs into his mic and trolling you constantly. Much immersion.

Also "only 25 years after the bombs fell" yet somehow the world looks more alive than Fallout 4...Good show Bethesda.

I WISH it had been ark with radiation

Inventory management is simplified when you realize every train Depot has a "everything in here can be picked up elsewhere" chest and you can toss all your junk in there, making it so dying has no penalty besides the caps lost.

Easy lazy exp from crafting, so of course I've done junk runs already just to craft tons of throwing knives. Great damage, even a *notorious* type of level 14 super mutant died from 6 of them.

It's really just more fallout 4, with the survival system from new vegas.

Thanks for the insight, TC. I've been on the fence about the game but this has driven me closer to buying it. I'll wait until after a month or so to see how it is but I'll likely end up buying it.

If it helps a general feeling is that it may be worth trying but not for $60.

The game feels like the next FF13 to me. When they announced that game had no towns, it gave me the biggest softy.

This game with no NPCs feels the exact same way. :(

A lot of people underestimate how much the various characters you meet and interact with make a Fallout game. Robots and holotapes don't have the same feel. All the robots I've seen have one or two lines of generic dialogue so it's not like they are fully fleshed out characters either.

There's"towns" as in like, 8-13 buildings with 3-5 having crafting benches and shop npc bots. There's npc bots with quests and stuff. Found one who my teammate talked with and said he won a contest and gave him a shotgun but not me. Found another who roamed an area saying I couldn't help research animals without a recon scope. And there's an army training facility with a drill sergeant who I was doing training courses under when the beta time ended

It's pretty much exactly what I said it was in the OP. Heavy emphasis on exploration and looting. No dialog wheels. It's still Fallout, in the sense that it doesn't play like another game, which was my biggest worry. When it was first announced, I was expecting fallout minecraft or some shit.

Exploration in fallout/elder scrolls has always been my jam. I would completely ignore story, and just explore the countryside. The story was just distraction for me.

If you're like me in the sense that you value wondering around and looting, then you'll love it. It's still got a bit of story for those who like that kind of thing. The biggest draw for me, aside from exploration, is the coop. Many times I've been wondering aimlessly, exploring interior cells in fallout and thought to myself "it would be kinda cool if I could actually have another player here with me.". I got what I wanted.

Wait wait, are there actually signs / mention of the BoS in 76? Or do they just have the T60 power armor available for players to use (which IIRC was a new addition to FO4 and was pre-war military issue before the Brotherhood assumed use of it much later)?

If it's the former, then it might just be the laziest misstep Beth's ever taken with the Fallout lore.

Hell, if you follow the first quest line as you exit the vault (track the movements of the overseer) you'll find several terminals mentioning the brotherhood. I've found a few others in unrelated areas and some in "while you're following the main quest you'll get these additional quest lines" ones.

Needless to say, having only robots as NPCs is unusual. But there might not be just robots, there's some top of the world mission I'll get to next session I get in.
