Poll of the Day > I bet the majority who vote for Sonic are clueless on the other series

Sonic 1-3 are classics, but in my opinion, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage are what I think of when someone mentions the Genesis/Mega Drive and are more fun to play

Or, just maybe, the Sega lineup was pretty trash.

Fair enough. I played all the games on the list except a full play of Toejam and Earl and Sonic might be the best one on there. I do like Phantasy Star, and PSO is still my most played game, but the best games on the Genesis are non-arcade port standalones

Yeah, its sad to say, but Sonic IS the most well-known and I hope SEGA brings their other IPs back (which, theyre sorta doing with their campaign to 2020).

It was, for the most part. But, the best SRPG games were Shining Force games.

Streets of rage for me. Except 3 fuck that one.

I need to go back and actually finish phantasy star 2 then work on 3 and 4. Got near the end and just burned out on it. Not a big sci Fi guy but something about phantasy star drew me in. Loved online episode 1 and 2.

Golden axe was fun as hell too but just screamed we made this overly difficult so you'd waste more quarters. Couldn't beat anything but easy mode until I was an adult. But in all fairness I gave up easily as a kid.

Never played to jam and Earl. Didn't like shinobi and Sonic I loves the games as a kid but I guess the fact I liked Mario more always made me feel like I didnt like it as much as I really did.

Just remember when I was a kid I had a game called 6 pack. It had Sonic streets of rage shinobi some motorcycle racing game bejewled I think and golden axe all on one cart. My now best friend got caught by my grandad trying to steal it and my reaction was pretty much. I ain't even mad, can't blame him that's a damn good game.

phantasy star 2

Phantasy Star 2 suffers from the same crippling design problem as the first two Dragon Quest games... they're designed so that as you explore and fail areas you gradually level up in the process, but since most people use walkthroughs or save states (they're available on Steam) the success-through-failure model of these games really REALLY becomes a problem.

For example, some of the last dungeons in Phantasy Star 2 are outright mazes (the 4 towers on Dezoris) that if you take a straight path to the end in all of them you'll have about HALF the required level to beat the final boss.

I wasn't really using a guide other than to find where I needed to go next as in finding the dungeon. And that didn't come till late game.

It is just a fact of life that the flagship platformers are always more popular. Look at Mario for Nintendo, or Bonk for the TG 16. I'll admit that all of those series you listed are great, but what was the series that got me to even look at a Sega Genesis back in the day? Sonic. The other series where just nice additions once I got done with Sonic 1-3.

Eh the incident led to major trust issues in our friendship. I was quick to accuse him of theft for a long time but fortunately every time I found the item in question.

But yeah he was lucky to have me. O was loyal when most people wouldn't have been and it paid off in the end for me as he grew up into a pretty good guy

You're right; I haven't played any games in any of the other series on that list, and I voted for Sonic as much for later Sonic games as for the Genesis ones. I vote in every poll, though >_>; I just pick the closest answer if none of them fit exactly.

The only phantasy star games I liked were the online ones excluding universe. All the streets of rage games were good.

You know you're getting old when games that were household names are now viewed as obscure hispter references...

Did you know that Streets of Rage 4 was cancelled because the new head of Sega at the time never heard of the franchise?

Doesn't surprise me after the way they've destroyed their IPs over the last 20 years.

Pso2 could've made serious money in the west and been in on the ground floor of the f2p explosion. I can't remember exactly what the issue was, something to do with them making a dumb licensing deal and they basically weren't allowed to release the game in certain markets.

I voted Sonic. I know about Ecco, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, and ToeJam & Earl. But Sonic was still my favorite out of those...
