Phanpy evolved into Donphan, a hype/popular new Pokemon, but you can only catch one really late in the game in GS.
So they fix it in Crystal by making it appear on one of the first routes in the game!
Oh but it's only a 5% spawn chance.
And also it can only be found in the morning.
Oh and also it's one of the few Pokemon that instantly flees when you encounter it.

Like what the fuck lol. It's not even a great Pokemon. Not counting Mud Slap, it literally only learns one ground attack and it's at like level 50 or something.

fun fact, it's one of the only 2 of ash's mons to evolve in another saga than the one he was caught at (he evolved in AG while he was caught in OS, the other one would be quilava, who evolved in dp, though there's also ambipom, but she was dawn's when she evolved, so she doesn't count)

Also can we talk about your can't even get some of the Gen 2 Pokemon until you fucking beat the game and go back to Kanto?

The other day I was thinking "Huh, how come I never trained a Houndour in any of the Gen 2 games over the years?" and then I looked up where I could catch one. Next to fucking Celadon City
(IIRC Slugma was like this too)

And don't even get me started on Xatu.

I don't remember well enough anymore but I remember he was one of the best rapid spinners in the game. I believe it was because most of the entry hazard/set up pokemon were physical and Donphan had a massive 120 base def/90 HP and a good defensive type in ground. You also had a STAB Earthquake with 120 base attack, which back then was a very basic recipe for success because EQ was op on things that didn't even get STAB.

I think by now he's been powercrept and is doomed to go 2nd against things that can break through his physical wall.

Lmao

Ground is a top 3 type, if not the best one

Hits 5 types super effectively
Earthquake is one of the best moves in the game and is a spread move in doubles
Really only countered by Flying/Levitate/Air Balloon

One of the biggest reasons why infinite use TMs was great is that you could keep reusing the Earthquake TM

Yeah I didn't know about this either to I started my file last week.

There's literally hundreds of trees across the game you can headbutt and heracross spawns in only a random few based on your ID number like you said.

Thank God some nerd on le Reddit put together a tool that you can enter the ID number and it shows your which trees have the special/rare spawns.

I'll never understand why they were so stingy with Pokemon's movepools back then too.

There's tons of Pokemon that only learn maybe one or two STAB attacks period, and even then it's usually only from TMs. Good example is Forretress, a cool as hell Pokemon. He literally can't learn any steel attacks, and the only bug attack he gets is through breeding.
Heracross is similar. He can't learn any good fighting attacks. The only non-gimmick one is Rock Smash, at a whopping 40bp lol. Sneasel also can't learn any Ice attacks without TMs.

It boggles my mind that anyone was able to play Pokemon competitively when there were so few options back then lol.

Donphan was a great check to Skarmory and Snorlax, since it could learn Fire Fang and Fire Fang was a special type move in 3rd gen which bypassed Skarmory's wall, while EQ on lax did quite a bit in general depending on how many curse he had up, on top of outspeeding lax. In 4th gen, you could've just EQ'd to bait out the roost from Skarm or hit a switch in really hard

Holy shit, I never realized that. What the frig were they thinking?

Tbqh I wonder if it has to do with the fact they scrapped half the map from the beta version. Kanto was only made up of a single map back then, so I assume the game was way more balanced before they turned it into a second region?
