That and I would round my tip to the nearest dollar because I'm lazy.

Think of it less as an expectation and more of a time saver, so you aren't trying to calculate the actual totals in your head.

you're supposed to tip on the pre-tax amount, so in your case that would be $24.

my general rule is to do 20% and then round up to the next dollar, so for a $24 tab i'd tip $5.00

The problem with stuff like that is that it pretty much makes you feel guilty if you don't tip a certain amount. Gratuity has turned into a mandatory practice

I never feel guilty because I make sure I can afford both the meal and a potential 25% tip or I don't go out to eat. If I feel like I am going to shaft them on their tip, i'll do take out or eat at home.

Do servers even get non cash tips? How is this given to them? Boss saves all the receipts and adds it up after 2 weeks and gives the amount to the server in their check? Or do they add it up every night and give the servers cash from the till??

Pretty much this. Just this last weekend my wife and I ate out and had exceptionally good service. We ate and both had drinks. The bill was almost $60 and I left $20 for a tip.

Also this ....

Some places do a pay card that gets filled up with the credit tips daily.

Others just add it to the paycheck.

Of course it has. Servers rely on tips since we only make at best 2.18 an hour around where I'm at. At my pizza hut, so long as I was making tips, I was on my serving wage of 2.15 an hour. Before we opened, I would make 7.50. And that was really only an hour. But if we were actually paid a decent damn wage, we wouldn't be so tip-reliant.

What if I were to tip $3 instead of $3.92? Would that make me an asshole?

depends on the day and whether it was johnny or suzie entitled working at the time.

johnny expects $2.98 min between the hours of 6-9 every odd calender date. $3.47 on even dates.

suzie wants min $4 for evenings and $6 for lunch.
