We have enough trouble with the people already here. Really that is why as a liberal I am against all these migrants coming here. We need to fix things for the people already here first, our education system, our medical, social services. We need to fix things for the people already here first.

No. But we're not doing it for the people who are already here, so let's not pretend like that's the issue.

I'm less willing to say we couldn't if we wanted, but I wholeheartedly agree with the latter half of the statement. We aren't even doing good by our own citizens.

This too. I hate hearing Republican fuckheads use talking points like this when they constantly fight against providing our own citizens with this stuff.

I mean, the government is supposed to serve the people, not the other way around.

I'd be fine with public healthcare coverage and education for all, with a minimum basic income.

Can you explain your answer here?

If we actually taxed corporations their fair share and we actually made it so nobody could acquire such an excessive amount of wealth that they would have enough money to individually end world hunger several times over? Yes. Yes we could.

America already has public health care. It is law for children to go to school and everyone can further their education and go to college. Americans have a basic income with the freedom to spend their basic income however they like

The issue here isn't structural, it's our political will to do so.

I'm responding narrowly to your question. Could we do all those things? Yeah. It wouldn't be complicated. Right now we already don't allow immigrants to participate in most of our social safety net programs. The issue is that we give their children birthright citizenship, and we have native citizens that are in households headed by immigrants.

One easy way to fix this? Stop giving people birthright citizenship.

I wouldn't support that but it is one possible solution

It's just like we could easily solve homelessness and a myriad of other problems that continue to plague our country and the world more generally. Our ability and knowledge to do so isn't lacking, its finding a solution that enough people can agree on that is the problem

I'll argue that everyone doesn't have access to quality health care and education. All schools and hospitals aren't equal.

I mean. Capitalism is only a few centuries old but technology would have grown regardless so long as the Roman Catholic Church didn't intervene in progression with their taboos. Yet thanks to capitalism, we have leaders who are bribed by oil companies to ignore science and make us reliant on a fuel source that's destroying the planet. In the span of about a century and half we've caused nearly irreparable damage that'll result in our own extinction and still have people in charge making it into a political issue when the only politics at play are "is the short term profits of a small group worth the extinction of the human race" and it seems that the latter is a cost they've accepted.

I do agree that our own fragmentation of ideology is a barrier to pushing solutions. However, I just dont see that there actually is a solution. Im certainly open to hearing ideas on how we could make such accommodations, but I am skeptical that one even exists.

I don't think there's much evidence to suggest immigrants are costly. Mostly, immigrants cost less than native born citizens. So for me this is kind of looking for a problem

There are problems with our political and economic system, but the idea that immigrants are a special pressure on them is imo fallacious

You know that somebody having a lot of wealth doesn't mean you have less, and somebody losing their wealth doesn't mean you have more, right? You know that corporations don't pay taxes, their consumers do, and raising corporate tax rates just raises the cost of living, right?

It's frightening that people with such a laughable grasp of economics are allowed to vote. Your stance is effectively "Some people have more than me and I don't like that."
