It's fair to say that you can't kiss someone without their consent. That's a lesson which needs to be taught. But to try and make a guy awakening his rightful fiance with a kiss into a rapist is silly.

If anything here is to be attacked, it's the notion of love at first site. And Frozen already crossed that bridge with a memorable musical number.

Except, you know, Prince Charming was a literal fucking stranger who stumbled upon a woman in distress with zero context and thought, "Gee, she's unconscious, I should kiss her".

No, he was not. I watched the film recently in preparation for a trip to Disney World.

She'd met him, fell in love with him, and expressly hoped to marry him. He already had her consent. The curse even states that it can only be broken by true love's (first) kiss. Had he just been some random guy attempting to kiss an unconscious girl, it wouldn't have awakened her.

And the context was that he had spent months looking for her to ask her to marry him and found her in a state of living death. I'm pretty sure the kiss was meant as a homage / farewell, but hey. We've already accused him of being a rapist. Let's just asy he as a necrophiliac trying to get his jollies and, being shocked that she woke up, ended up marrying her to mask his secret shame. Because, after all, that's probably what Walt Disney had in mind with that film.

I was talking about the original version. He was a stranger in that one.

To be fair, dragons in most ancient fables are actually sentient (or even human in some cases) and people routinely kill them just for being dragons/magic/because they have treasure.

If anything, it reflects that times have changed, and a parent explaining that to children seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Oh, the original version? Yeah, I'm not defending that. In the Disney version, they at least made the prince known to Snow White.

Isn't Sleeping Beauty way worse? Instead of a kiss it is an unconscious woman being raped. She only wakes up because one of the twins born from the rape sucked on her finger.

So it's okay for a parent to willfully ignore the context of a story to deliver a hamfisted lesson, but it's not okay to be annoyed with someone ignoring context to make a statement?

I'm not saying she's a failure of a parent or anything, but it is something to roll your eyes at if you're familiar with the story in question.

The original versions of most Disney stories are often quite ugly. Most of them amount to "everyone dies at the end."

The Little Mermaid is also banned in some Middle Eastern countries because Ariel is too scantily clad.

In the original Snow White, there was no kiss. The Prince asked the dwarves to move her glass coffin to his castle. The coffin slipped and the piece of poison apple lodged in her throat fell out of her mouth, causing Snow White to wake up.

Anyway, complaints about Disney princesses have gone back to the 80s. Belle, Ariel, and Mulan were all written by Disney to be more proactive in response to this criticism.

You should see the costumes the cast members wear at Disneyland. Ariel and Jasmine's costume would make Jessica Nigiri blush. I believe Jasmine's costume received so many complaints, they had to redesign it for the parks so that it showed much less skin.

Also, I learned an interesting thing about Disney cast members. When one is chosen to play a role, it's based on body type so that they can play multiple characters if need be. For example, if its a woman with a willowy figure, she will play young roles like Ariel, Belle, Wendy, and Tinkerbell. If she is voluptuous, she ends up with older matronly roles like Cinderella, Snow White, Megura, and the Evil Queen. If its a muscular man, he will play Hercules, Gaston, and Tarzan.

One Disney cast member was mortified because she had to fill in as Ariel at the last minute and it turned into a disaster. Normally she plays Cinderella since she has a voluptuous figure. As a result, the shell bikini showed so much cleavage, she ended up looking like a Russ Meyer vixen. She also didn't know how to play Ariel, so out of nervousness she fell back on her Snow White voice. She called it one of her worst days on the job.

Little Mermaid: girl abandons her friends & family to run off (swim off) after a guy who doesnt know her.

She forever gives up her voice to have human legs, but the downside is that he has to f*** her in 3 days or shell become a slave to a fat octo-witch.
