Not to mention all the "quality of life" changes and additions over the years.

Fuck, prior to the 64-bit era most games didn't even have battery saves. You either used passwords or had to play through the whole game in one sitting.

Most old games are "hard" due to shit design.

Most modern "hard" games are still piss fucking easy.

And then you have shit like this that just shouldn't exist:

Theyre a hell of a lot easier now. Back in the old NES days many of the games were ported from arcades. Arcades made their money by having the player put more money in when they failed. It was designed to be hard.

Def easier

Video games used to be considered just for nerds, bc of the amount of time/effort one would need to endure to actually beat a lot of them lol

Alot of older games are harder because of controls were worse and yeah I say I've gotten better because of them. Still can't beat ghouls and ghost though

Easier but it's not really a bad thing.

A lot of the 2D games still followed that arcade mentality. It wasn't about just making your way through the game. It was about learning the level design and gameplay enough that you can get through the game with your limited lives and continues. A game that did this now would be ripped to shreds. These days that mentality is now served by the rogue-like genre which gives you a new experience each time. Play an older 2D game with save states and you'll probably get through it in a couple of hours.

Early 3D games still had awkward level design. Often it was easy to get lost for dumb reasons. Controls could be awkward too.

I will say that often developers are scared to give players any sort of learning curve however. But that's more of a AAA issue.

Retro games were much more limited in scope, so they needed to be full of more trial and error gameplay to get the most out of them. Once they're mastered, there are very few that would take more than a few hours.

The lack of popularity with fighting games is proof that people don't like learning curves

Games are definitely easier. However, the REAL question is if games are more fun or less fun now, and that answer varies between people. Some people like easy, casual experiences like the New Super Mario Bros games. Others prefer the tear-your-hair-out difficulty of Classic Ninja Gaiden games. It just really depends

depends on our skill level that one can complete certain ones.

though the ones who can complete ninja gaiden are gaming gods.
