Never. Death penalty is unbecoming of a first world country.

Look at what they did to Anders Breivik. He'll most likely spend the rest of his life behind bars, even though he killed dozens of innocent people.

Those people are dealt with in other ways, like lifetime incarceration. Killing them helps no one.

Insurmountable evidence against for especially heinous murders, to the point where there's not even unreasonable doubt, or as a final penalty for individuals serving multiple life sentences and kill again in prison.

Some can't, but a lot can. Look at the rate of recidivism in other countries, and you'll see that it's much lower than in America. Americans have to face the ugly truth that its prison system is ineffective.

Then they eventually get out because someone of influential power wants them out, overcrowding forces them out, or they get their sentences dramatically reduced because of "good behavior" or "sheer amount of volunteer work among the community".

Then when they get out, they take out their anger on more people and possibly end up killing a lot of people.

If prison does not help you reintegrate into society, the odds of committing crimes again are WAY higher. What motivation do you have to improve if employers won't hire you or give you a second chance?

Every tax payer arguably. It usually costs more money to execute a prisoner than it does to keep them incarcerated their entire life.

Lots of reasons. Death penalty defendants are entitled to 2 lawyers provided by the state. Any death penalty sentence anywhere in the US is automatically appealed on the defendants behalf by the ACLU. They have to be housed in higher security prisons that cost more money per year. The actual cost just to execute them is usually around 100,000$. Lots of other reasons.

They would need two things;
- An admittance of guilt or indisputable evidence (and I mean completely indisputable).
- A situation where the person continuing to live could be a risk to more people (for example, a dictator whose supporters may attempt to break him out or kill more people to get him released).
Otherwise, I think life imprisonment is actually more of a punishment, as time has the best chance to make the person reflect on their crimes, and having them realize their crime means they will punish themselves worse than any of us could.

In any case where someone has, through a fair trial, been proven guilty of any non-victimless crime. (Which should be the only crimes.) Not entirely sure what the minimum age before it applies should be - 18 feels too high, but I also don't think we should be sentencing 10 year olds in the same way we sentence adults. Perhaps a maturity test is better than an age test there.

Different crimes can be distinguished by how the death penalty is applied - lesser crimes get a quick and painless one, harsher crimes... not so much.

Maybe, but that's also far more expensive to execute than... well, executing them, would be.

Corruption
Falsifying police reports
Murder
Rape
Ultra-grand theft (stealing more than $1m)
3rd offense DUI
Drug trafficking (but most drugs would be legal anyways.)
And reverse purge day, where instead of every crime is legal, every crime gets the death penalty. (half joking)

That makes sense. Murder is a worse crime than rape. A worse punishment for murder might just be the factor that stops some rapists from going for that in order to get rid of witnesses.

You get more time in prison for cocaine than you do for rape.
