It was only like 2 years ago that 15% was the new norm.

Time sure flies. Spending $20 bills for average food. I want to visit South East Asia again. Service is superb, food is great and you don't have to tip.

The norm

Is there like, a council that decides this?

It is New York. I wouldn't be surprised if it was voted on and passed by the mayor.

If more and more restaurants push for it over time, it'll become the norm, right? I was too young to pay for my own food 25 years ago, but wasn't the standard ~10% back then? Nowadays, 10% is cheapskate territory.

There are definitely cultural norms, and tipping (and tipping at certain percentages) for restaurant service in the US is one of them.

you can still leave a 15% tip making 18% not the minimum.

I once forgot to tip and the waiter stood still/blocked the door. No joke.

Another time, I was going to tip after I get my change back but they didn't bring any change back. Had to flag down another waiter to ask for my change. The whole paying process when you dine-in takes way longer in America because of the stupid shenanigans.

You know how even fast food places now have a place for a tip? I never give a tip there, I wonder if it pisses them off. It'll get to that point that so many people feel guilted into doing it that the workers start expecting it.

Tipping won't go away just because you guys choose not to believe in it. And get ready for 10% service charge in the next 5 yrs if you live in a blue state.

Yeah. Even ghetto looking halal street vendors have tip jars. They sometimes guilt you into tipping too by asking stupid questions. People are so greedy in the U.S.

15% is the minimum decent tip, 18% is normal for added gratuity. And no it wasn't a couple years ago 15% has been the baseline for decades.

Imagine thinking tipping and gratuity are two different things xd.
