spoilers for MGS4
I thought about it for a minute. MGS4 is fan service done wrong. so much of it attributes itself to the player having played the previous 3 games. on top of that, so much of it is a summation or retelling of events that happened in the previous 3. mgs4 is the magnum opus of unrealized potential in gams. gamplay wise it addresses all the problems that plagued the previous entry (inventory management mode is made no more) and yet it only gives incredibly limited opportunities to experience this. as a gam, this is why it fails you could've cut MGS4's ending off right at the gunshot, segued into "here's to you" and the credits, and gammers would lose their shit for decades to come. instead, it segues into fanservice, bringing BB back almost inexplicably to spout a half-hours worth of exposition as to why he's back and why you should feel sad when he finally keels over TB's grave. as a story, this is why mgs4 fails yeah, sure. even the revised ending above is undeniably fanservice, but it's much less self-serving fanservice. which, back to my main point, is why mgs4 is so bad. it's bad fanservice coupled with good (new) gamplay elements which take a backseat to this bad fanservice --- 7Dd_jr_dF0Y ...
