When I was a teacher I never talked about my personal dating life and also kinda told my kids don't worry about it in a joking way when they asked if I had a girlfriend (my class was weirdly convinced I was a player)
Looking back...should I have said I was gay? Only reason I say this now...is because I'm sure some of my students were and they seemed closeted...and looking back I felt I should have served as a role model that it's "ok to be gay". But idk. Any thoughts

In an ideal world, teachers should be able to state that theyre gay and be a role model to gay students worried about coming out, but in the world we live in, it would never fly with some parents.

All it takes is one homophobic parent to view homosexuality as some sort of sexual deviance to get you fired.

Maybe as an answer to an invasive question about your personal life, but your would be potentially be inviting attention from the worst kind of parents. Like, you can get fired for coming out at work still in several states. If the subject of your sexuality at any point became a factor in some drama developing at the school, they'd fire you out of convenience just to sidestep the scandal.

I don't know.

I was also a varsity wrestling student and mentioned it at my school and they wanted me to be a coach...lol that was a hard pass. Too many chances something could appear wrong and not worth the trouble

What state do you live in because in certain States if it gets out that you're gay you'll be asked to quit your position or just be outright dismissed. but now I still think it is of no relevance to your students whether or not you're gay or not and you shouldn't do it you don't see straight teachers making it clearly obvious that they're straight

His main reason doesn't really apply to straight teachers as much. I'd argue it might've been a good move especially if you were a friendly and fairly open teacher (as you seem to be, from what I can infer here). However, there's always the potential issue of negative reactions and it might've been better just to avoid any hassle.

I'm in California so not as risky, but I was in a very vulnerable student population since many could not speak English well so not good optics

You shouldnt have some of kids parents have mental illness called religion and wouldnt be able to handle it.

honestly though i wouldn't worry about talking about your dating life in front of the class. just keep it vague. but if you feel like some children are struggling with their sexuality then help, but also keep it vague and don't reveal your sexuality. idk i just imagine a cool teacher from films saying this one quote and inspiring the kid completely, and they both get it

what would help is clamping down on homophobia if anyone is a jackass about it. even if its casual comments. seems like they respect you because you're a "player" and they believe you're straight, unfortunately it's likely that both of those will have more of a positive effect when you call them out on it

So, you would you want to know why sexuality came up when a teacher's last name changed or a female teacher shows up pregnant? Or how about when a teacher starts wearing an engagement ring? These are all innocent things that clearly indicate some sexuality.

This idea that even acknowledging anything other than being straight is "shoving their sexuality in kids' face" is homophobic bullshit and needs to die.

Imagine coming up with an idea this terrible retroactively. I had a gay teacher in high school, but he was a PROFESSIONAL and didn't bring it up, because why the fuck would he? His job was to teach science, and that's what he did. We could just tell he was, and we didn't care.

Its nobodys business in the workplace really. Especially if theyre kids. I would just think it appropriate to come out if you get constantly harassed by coworkers about the nature of your dating life. If thats the case - then just be open and fuck it, tell your HR that youre gay so they know the situation too. In general though I dont think its anyones business.

There's no reason to go out of your way and say "I'm gay" the second you meet them, but if it's relevant (like if they're asking about your personal life and you feel comfortable talking about it) there's no reason to hide it either.
