I got a job offer today for a place that gives ONE WEEK of PTO.

"Oh... well can I take any unpaid time off?"

"Oh my... well we have an operation to run, we can't just be giving everyone time off here and there". She sounded legitimately offended. I turned her down.

The past 7 years I just didn't work in my 4.5 month off season and went to the places I wanted to go to, visited family, and dedicated myself to my passions... like a person in a wealthy country should be able do to

What do you do?

My current job is stingy with PTO (I get none until i've been there a year), but has a great schedule if you just want to work a 40 and have plenty of days off. We do 12 hour shifts, and its split up in a way that you only work 7/14 days. (2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on, 3 days off). So I'm literally off half the year.

I love this schedule a lot so far. I just wish it were attached to a better job. Unfortunately, its low paying factory work, and local, so probably not what you're looking for.

My wife's a teacher, that looks fucking hard. She worked 55+ hour weeks the first three years

Maybe high school gym teacher or something...

There's some allowance for it, otherwise there wouldn't be substitute teachers.

I get three weeks PTO and 11 paid holidays. It's okay. It's not enough though.

I can carry over 10 days between calendar years, so next calendar year I can potentially take off 24 days with the 11 paid holidays for 35 total.

There are sand and oil field companies with 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. I've never done that kind of work and wouldn't want to

I still find that kind of ridiculous. That's like 4 weeks of time off? Four weeks of an entire YEAR is considered amazing. Our system sucks...

A lot of work in construction and in Oil and Gas give tons of time off, but your time on is really hard. For example I was an engineer out on a rig, and I worked 2 weeks straight, 7 days a week, 12 hour days (plus 1 or 2 hours driving to and from location). But then I got 2 weeks off immediately after that. Only worked half the year, and made 6 figures.

Plus the engineers were at the low end of the pay scale out there, the entry level operators (a lot had no college education) made more than I did.

Plus Colorado is a Oil and Gas hot spot right now, they can't hire people fast enough (as long as prop 112 doesn't pass)

I'm applying to some 911 positions, they work 24 on/24 off for three cycles and then have a four day weekend, and you can trade shifts later in the year for 8 day weekends. Plus PTO

I did land a job with a surgeon that affords unlimited unpaid time off, so it worked out okay. Seems like the medical field has what I need

yea, you do get (very few) sick days and a couple vac days but it's really frowned down upon to take time off unless it's something really urgent, you're very sick, etc. whereas in the private sector you can just take off whenever if you have the time accrued

This is what I was thinking. Someone on here posted about doing nuclear reactor decontamination that's good pay for only a few weeks a year.
