It was just a generally well-told story of a former fighter struggling with loss and age, an estranged family, and just finding out what life has remaining for him. Instead we learn she's not dead, so she's an adult and presumably has a decent life. Or John chooses to believe this I imagine. I've got to assume he's thinking 'well, I sure don't want to pop in on my same-age-as-me-now daughter and freak her the eff out.' THAT would be awkward, for them anyway.
