After Namek, he stole a spaceship and fucked off for a while. Then he arrives just in time for Frieza and his dad to show up. Then Trunks shows up, ices Frieza and warns about the Androids, so he has to work together with them again. It was really only between the Cell and Buu Sagas that anyone really "forgave" him and by that point he'd been a changed man. Enough that he needed Babidi's magic to become a villain again.
