I heard Japan was supposed to be racist as fuck, but the only "racism" I ever experienced while I was there was people assuming I could only speak English (which to be fair, while not true about me, would have been a completely correct assumption about most white people visiting Japan). As soon as I showed them I in fact could speak Japanese, they accepted that and only used English if I was having trouble understanding them.

I've never been to Japan, but strangers are pretty friendly to Jake. Maybe people are just more friendly in general in Japan, who knows.
Same with China, they were friendly to Jake.

The only really outright racists he faced were in Taiwan, where a bunch of Taiwanese Incels targeted Jake and another streamer for stealing their women

And I think the women on their stream wasn't even Taiwanese, but I don't remember the whole story

Not the in-your-face aggressive hateful kind of racist, but still the type that will treat you as lesser for it. Think like racism after legal segregation ended but before most people accepted that it had. That's what I had heard Japan was supposedly like (though it was not in practice).

Japan is probably the single most xenophobic country on Earth. There are literally explicit laws banning non ethnically Japanese people (even natural born citizens) from certain activities.

The Ainu, who are the original inhabitants of Japan, are also heavily discriminated against.

maybe that's the difference. People in Los Angeles are very direct. I've been called so many racist slurs on the bus, but it doesn't really bother me. It's just the culture here imo.

So am I and I'd say the US is a lot more openly and maliciously racist than China is, which is more casual. There are definitely many times more hate crimes in the US than China.

China is like 98%+ Han Chinese in nearly all major provinces.

Japan and China are very homogeneous. Their form of taking racism is more discrete. They are less likely to shout at your face racial ephitets.

I was in Japan for two weeks. Hard to say if I experienced racism where I went, but I saw a coworker might have. They didn't let him in a bar that was clearly empty

The issue is that they're all so ethnically homogenous that they don't really ever encounter minorities in the first place. Where things come to a head is when you try to move in. Then suddenly you're an invader, uneducated, inferior, etc.
