she doesnt really have a leg to stand on with this particular incident. Her coach admitted cheating and this umpire has a record of disciplining high profile male players in high stakes games. That's not to say there's no sexism in the wider scope of the game but crying wolf here helps noone and makes Serena look like a spoiled brat.

tl;dr: One minority woman gets disqualified during a tennis match against another minority woman, and this somehow makes the referee "sexist" and "racist".

She didn't get disqualified, and she was saying that she was punished harder than she's seen men be for similar or worse behavior.

From the article:
Her third violation came after she called the umpire a thief, leading to the automatic loss of a game.

Yeah? A game. She lost 2-6, 4-6. If she'd been disqualified, there would be no score.

Not really anything to do with the topic at hand but she's been thrown out/disqualified during a grand slam before.

What?

Immediately following the match, they interviewed her coach and said "it looked like you might have been making a coaching motion" and he said he was indeed coaching, though he didn't think Serena was looking at him at the time.

with so much misinformation ITT, I'm wondering if there's a Serena Williams fanfic being worked on.

somebody should do a story where she hits the ball so hard, the speed and force creates a wormhole to the past and explodes on the forehead of Lee Harvey Oswald before he finished loading his rifle.

Technically, no. In the 2009 final, she got a point penalty on match point. But, that was because the next punishment she could get was a point penalty (one level below the game penalty she got yesterday), it wasn't a point penalty given to kick her out--she lost as a consequence of when the penalty was given.

Serena Williams' Coach Admits to Coaching

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2794851-serena-williams-coach-admits-to-coaching-during-us-open-final-amid-controversy

The first warning was completely justified and that's when the meltdown began. Her coach admitted to coaching, so they did attempt to cheat. Regardless of whether she got the message or not, it's still an attempt to cheat.

And to compare it to incidents in men's tennis from 20-40 years ago? Seriously? There are new rules implemented to prevent those kind of tantrums.

Anyone who isn't acting like a victim can see things for what it is. Williams, who is a mother now and should be a better role model, was throwing a tantrum. All the warnings were justified. The media need to wake the hell up instead of taking the side of an entitled brat.

What a sore loser though, losing to an Asian must be annoying for her.

Osaka is Black as well.

She is mixed, not black.

Weird, this Colin Kaepernick dude is as white as he is black but everyone says he's 100% black. Weird how mixed race opinions change based on who the person is.

mixed isn't an ethnicity or nationality. Japanese is correct and Black is correct. neither are wrong and both don't need mentioning in order to be accurate.

but you're correct. "race" opinions change depending on who that person is. it's also very telling when people aren't consistent. from how they talk about Obama to Rashida Jones.

let Rashida Jones start being vocal about police brutality, and you'll see how quick she loses her White card to certain demographics. if she started that "Blue Lives" stuff, she'd have been called other things, too.

Who has called rashida white, ever?

What do the men and women have to do with each other though? They play totally independently from each other.

So if there is some sort of sexism towards women then they all get that treatment.

If the rules are enforced differently for men and women, there might be a sexist double standard. For example, in the same tournament a woman was hit with a code violation because she took her shirt off for a second (she put it on backwards at the end of a break and just took it off then back on correctly). It's very common for guys to take their shirts off with no consequence. Afterwards, officials acknowledged the double standard and apologized.

I don't understand what you're trying to infer here?

Just because a few male tennis players weren't disciplined the exact same way doesn't make what Serena did OK.

And shit like that happens every day. It's something you're taught when you're a fucking toddler.

Just because some one gets away with something doesn't mean it is OK to do the same. I'd have more compassion for Serena if she was in a dead tie with Osaka and got totally hosed. But she was getting hammered. It just comes off as petulant and childish to go after a judge because you didn't agree with his calls.

It's all you hear about now, "Serena in controversy at the open....oh and some girl Naomi Osaka won the title..."

And don't even go off about "I am here fighting for women's rights!" lmao just stop. No one is thinking you're out there fighting the good fight for women when you just took a once in a lifetime moment away from another woman.

Lol now youre trying to insult my home out of the blue because youre too immature to come up with a reasonable argument. Hawaii has some of the fewest flyovers while being known as one of the most beautiful states in America.

In tennis, GameFAQs, or just real life in general, just because someone else gets away with breaking the rules doesnt make it right. If people were more mature and realized this, there wouldnt be people whining like Serena.

Her coach cheated, she acted like a child and smashed her racket, then argued with the umpire. Its not like she was instantly punished. She had a warning and a minor penalty first. But I suppose blind fanboys will just ignore that fact and remain on the sexist wagon.

It all comes down to how many times you commit an offence. A male player might blow up and swear and perhaps come across worse than Serena did in her tantrum, but if it's not the third time he's broken the rules that match he won't get a game penalty.

It goes warning, point penalty, game penalty then either a set penalty or a DQ, I'm not sure what comes next.

But it's as simple as that

First of all, those videos don't compare to what Serena did. In one of them, the "argument" is Murray blandly asking why a player is being allowed to challenge. One is Novak arguing about the rain, arguably a dangerous condition for both players.

None of them show the player actively berating the umpire like Serena did. Oh wait, one did, and Djokovic was given a violation! It's even Ramos, the same chair umpire from the women's final, and he's giving a violation to a man. How about that?

Again, the game penalty wasn't some arbitrary thing Serena was subject to. It was because of her multiple violations over the course of the match. All of those videos are from separate matches, so, even if all of them even showed a comparable violation, it's not the same because if it's someone's first violation then it's universally a warning. Just like how Serena was warned on her first violation.
