Like seriously, whats the point of spending inordinate amounts of time and money just to force some random being into existence?

Just so you can pass on your genes? What a massively arbitrary and inconsequential goal. A waste of a lifetime.

Just so you can have someone inherit your stuff? There is a good chance they wont even like you, or they could end up being a deadbeat.

Because your religion tells you to? Sorry, but they are just trying to get more members and therefore more money.

Having kids is the biggest waste of an existence I can imagine. Use that time/money to travel the world and live your dreams. Don't live your life for someone else.

Truth hurts. The narrative that having a family is the only way to be happy is one of society's biggest lies. Gotta keep people popping out kids somehow though to keep the world running.

I have no desire to pass on my genes. It is completely meaningless and arbitrary. It isn't any sort of accomplishment.

No, I wouldn't want to condemn a human life to live in a world marred by poverty and environmental decay.

This is also a very valid point. I have always considered reproduction to be very ethically questionable. A child is unable to consent to birth, and by being brought into this existence, you are guaranteeing they will experience pain at some point. Creating life means that you are creating the capacity for suffering.

I think you misread. I said society would cease to function if everyone stopped reproducing, therefore it is beneficial to have a false social narrative that suggests having kids will make you happy.

i mean the whole point of evolution is to ensure the successful continuation of your species so nah not really

unless you replace your reproductive capability with putting more effort into helping to raise the offspring of your siblings/parents, like eusocial insects.

Evolution doesn't have a "point". Effective reproductive strategies are just a byproduct of it.

What's the average cost to raise a child to 18 these days? As I am now, I dont really want a kid. That's not to say I wont want one in the future but for now the money I have goes to paying for me to live and the excess is to go out and have fun with my friends, and a kid would shake that whole thing up. But that's just me.

natural selection would not select for being non-reproductive...

There is no defined "point" to evolution. It is simply the process of change over time. Obviously, natural selection is the unavoidable process by which organisms that are best able to reproduce pass on their genes, but that doesn't make them "better". By your argument, a super-human with god-like intelligence who was also impotent would be inferior to some random piece of trailer trash with 8 kids. Your logic is flawed.

Yeah, I've never read a convincing counterargument to antinatalism. It's difficult to maintain that overall pleasure tends to outweigh overall suffering in one's life, and once you've relinquished that ground, once you've admitted that suffering forms the greater part of the equation, it's easy to see that reproduction is in almost all cases morally unjustifiable.

Where have you been all my life? Refreshing to see someone who gets it.

i have a base biological desire to reproduce, but at the mental level, not really super into the idea but also am not necessarily opposed to it in the right circumstances.

if i ever get to a point where i am doing well in life, i might adopt a kid just so they can have a better shot at their own life

you're the one talking about being more 'highly evolved' tbh.

an impotent genius would have a lower level of reproductive fitness than your 'trailer trash' example. lol

Nice to see that your sole interpretation of a beings worth is based on their reproductive capacity. How very narrow minded.

again, you're the one that tried to bring evolution into this.

in terms of evolutionary worth, a sterile individual is useless.

Around the age of 12 I remember it dawning on me for the first time what a living hell kids are on parents. What a financial and emotional drain they are on people. Us on our parents, them on theirs. And back then I realized I wanted nothing to do with them.
That opinion has not changed at all and I'm 36. If anything it's only gotten stronger.

Kids are essentially a cancer on your life and finances. And I've never understood when people say. Yeah it's a soul crushing, life ending, back snapping, sprit breaking, never ending drian on your sanity and finances ensuring you'll never have a moment's peace for the rest of your life. But it's worth it.
That bs is like trying to lie about there being some silver lining to losing your legs in a wood chipper. It's a life changing miserable event there's no way to ever recover from and your life is worse for it. But you don't have to worry about buying shoes anymore.
Yeah. Keep lying to try to convince yourself of that.
