136 MB for an AR-15.

Some of you may be aware, that this company recently won their lawsuit regarding the distribution of blueprints for the 3D printing of guns. The court gave the go ahead to host the files, and they went live today. You can currently download blueprints for an AR-15, an AK styled rifle, a couple of handguns, and a few other parts. The site will eventually host user created content, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of effect this has on the gun market in the future. I'm not really sure about the rules on this site about mentioning the website (so I won't), but the it's easy enough to find.

What do you guys think? A good day for freedom? A bad day for law enforcement or gun manufacturers? Do you think by and large, this is a novelty and nothing will change?

I don't see why someone would buy a 3d printer to print out receivers that they still need to remove the support from when they could get a ghostgunner or milling machine and work with actual aluminum. It's probably cheaper and quicker than a 3d printer.

This discussion is stupid.

3D printers are expensive
3D printed guns are shit

You can just buy better guns for a fraction of a 3D printer to make a shit gun

The whole thing is fearmongering

The ATF just straight up sells them guns, that's right, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms which will kill almost 100 people claiming they had reason to believe there were illegal NFA items, will sell illegal weapons to the Cartel.

I think it's awesome. You can't really use 3D printed guns as a reliable weapon anyway, so it's not like we have to worry about the evil terrorists getting a hold of mass production of assault weapons.

Nor can one be smuggled through a metal detector, for the intended purpose anyway, as a plastic gun is pretty much just a suicide bomb.

Not to mention, the only part on that that is considered a gun, is the lower receiver. You can literally buy all the parts without ever going through a background check, and then use a 3D printer for the lower receiver. Assemble it yourself, and boom, now you have a gun that isn't in any government databases.

Not to mention not everyone is going to have access to the same kind of material that this company has access to so the number of shots that the average consumers AR-3D can fire could (and probably will be) significantly less.

This isn't something to be worried about.

Yes.

You realize the only guns in a government database are NFA weapons. Literally all that happens when you normally get a background check for a firearm at an FFL is they do a background check, they aren't telling the government what gun you just got but they do keep a record of all their transfers.

Right. Shouldn't have thrown around the word "databases" so carelessly. I'm aware there isn't a registry, but the ATF has a tracing center that can track down weapons that were sold from licensed dealers. They also keep any firearm transaction records from dealers that have gone out of business (as required under the law).

This is the first publicly printed AR lower demonstrated to withstand a large volume of .223 without structural degradation or failure. The actual count was 660+ on day 1 with the SLA lower. The test ended when we ran out of ammunition, but this lower could easily withstand 1,000 rounds.

The only people who are afraid of this are the really young/inexperienced and the dishonest shills looking to peddle their political narrative of choice.

If someone currently wants to cause chaos, it's not hard to make a homemade bomb or buy a truck or find an illegal firearm. Nothing will change for the worst with 3d printed guns. If anything it could be safer since the downloaded files will leave a trail.

The Anarchist Cookbook and far more dangerous material have been pirated anonymously for far longer. Anyone who would abuse 3d printed firearms already has a wealth of devastating knowledge available to them, but fortunately most people are good people.
