Just a case of a white person using the word as a black person would. To me at least that makes it less offensive, though not excusable I guess. Our society has such fucked up priorities when it comes to punishing bigotry. These people dedicate their lives to their craft and we celebrate their talents. But somehow, if we find out they're not morally perfect on togetherness, we have to literally kill their life accomplishments and amputate their potential for any further ones. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. What does it feel like to know you will never accomplish greatness ever again in your young life?
