The SSD is soldered to the board, which isn't new, but they've also removed the special "data recovery port" that allows techs to bypass a faulty board and access the SSD directly. The official spin from Apple seems to be "do more frequent backups."

oh yeah, and these things have an Intel i9 with inadequate cooling, thus increasing the odds that your logic board will get cooked

This is just another move to stop you from being able to do any kind of maintenance on your tech. Typical apple.

Sooner or later you won't even be able to wipe the fucking screen on your iPhone unless you use a certified Apple iCloth

Your logic board was already cooked if you decided to buy and use an Apple product unironically

It would be handy if they were just a universally worse product but unfortunately they're still better at certain things

I've literally never had to yank the HDD out of any of my computers or otherwise hard retrieve data so this seems like accentuating the negative

You have plenty of reliable backup options on Mac just like other Apple products

This is also a compelling argument

Backup options are a hell of a lot smarter and more easily automated than they used to be, really we should be moving away from the hell that is waiting for an epic system failure and then relying on a last resort data retrieval like this.

I'm all for sound backup strategies, but I feel like this is a poor way to encourage people to use them

the simplest solution would be to stop soldering the goddamn drives to the goddamn boards

Yeah. People are clearly going to buy macbooks no matter the price so there's no reason they can't move to detachable nvme m.2 for storage.

I mean, it would be a pain in the ass to get data off it regardless but in a worst case scenario you could always just buy another macbook and swap the nvme card.
