I've listened to two albums now based on a rec from a friend. I'm really not liking them too much. There's a good riff here or there and some nice doom elements once in a while, but the new album (prequel I think?) is just... pop rock. The costumes are ridiculous. The lyrics sound like satire. And the singer is way too gentle to come over the hard rock riffs they use, it's like if they had a pop singer.

I've heard worse mainstream metal, but definitely don't see what the sold out stadium hype is about.

Ghost is absolutely my favorite band going right now. Hes an absolutely incredible songwriter and every album brings a new sound to their library while maintaining that flavor.

The lyrics and costumes ARE satire, though, in a sense at least. I guess I wouldnt say satire so much as intentionally campy. Theyre like if a classic horror movie was in band form, thats the vibe. It works BECAUSE its all in fun, the shows make it particularly obvious that its tongue in cheek. Couldnt take it seriously if they were deathly serious about it.

And yeah, they really are more hard rock than metal but genre debates are my least favorite thing ever so whatever on that one

Im gonna end up being the Stan in this thread but so be it.

People that love Ghost, think theyre the next big metal/rock band, and either want to collaborate or have collaborated: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Guns n Roses

People that call Ghost bland/lazy/toothless: metal snobs who loved Ghost when they were underground but now hate them after becoming popular and CE buttbeards

Though I will say, Tobias Forge openly embraces his pop influences, says he doesnt care what genre you call the band, and goes out of his way to not be put in a box, so theres a reason why I wouldnt recommend Ghost to metal fans so much as classic rock fans. Hes as much inspired by Queen as he is Black Sabbath.

I'm not a big fan but I think they're better than mediocre. They're one of the best modern rock bands, although that isn't really saying much.

Speaking of CE buttbeardly behavior, I've seen you post in at least four different topics about this meme band and never once have you ever accepted criticism of them.

You're either Tobias Forge himself or you're fifteen and this is your first band crush.

And you're here to criticize me for being a fan of them every time I post in a topic about them once every few months.

Why on earth would you "accept criticism" if 1) you don't agree with said criticism and 2) said criticism is always "lol they suck!" and that's about it? If TC asked if you liked *insert your favorite game here* and I said it sucked, are you supposed to just be like "nah you're right my b, it sucks"? It's a message board, we discuss. And it's not like my making jokes about CE's taste is exactly lowering the standard of conversation when the replies are just "memetal" and "shit sucks" either. I'd be happy to have a nuanced discussion about it.

Meliora and Prequelle IMO. Meliora has their Grammy-winner on it (Cirice) and is probably their best collection of songs, for my money, but Prequelle probably flows best as a complete album.

Wouldn't say this is true for all their stuff (costumes aside, obviously) but definitely some, especially here and there on Prequelle. Dance Macabre is practically an homage and Forge loved them growing up.

I voted mediocre but I'd say my honest feelings for them fall between the first and second choices.

I don't dislike them, but I kinda burned out of them after Meliora (as well as a lot of metal in general).

Lately I've been more interested in rap/hip-hip, jazz, and funk/soul music, though I still own all my rock and metal stuff (basically I've felt more like head bobbing than moshing).
