In the SNES/Genesis generation, game box art was literally a work of art with cool drawings.

But more recently, at most, it's just a game rendering of the face or body of the main character.

Same thing happened to movie posters.

With the internet and social media came a decline in the need for catchy visuals. You just have to get your name out there.

Very depresssing. Even designs and logos are more minimalist.

In addition, digital games don't need the same sort of art.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, though. Older games could sell based on boxart despite being horrible, and not having to worry about that frees up some more money for development.

Box Art picked back up in the PS2 days but its probably on the decline again.

I think you might be misremembering. There were some decent ones, but it was also the birthplace of the 'ominous head floating in the sky with totally radical font' design.

Then when they feature too many characters or are too colorful they get disparaged for that.

move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Have sheep troopers squadrons A and B flank the cows. They're using DC-17 hoof blasters.

You know what had the best boxart? Mario games.

I submit into evidence these images.

They've got so much detail, and so much going on there. Tons of color, lots of action, bright, vibrant...

Zelda's got some pretty awesome box art too, though.

Especially like Link's Awakening's boxart. Almost reminiscent of the Mario boxart with how much it has going on.

I still think some boxart nowadays can be pretty good too, though.
