Current Events > I have never played any Fallout game. Is Fallout 4 worth a play?

Gonna subscribe to game pass again so I can play for 3 months. Is fallout 4 worth a try or is it underwhelming? Heard people say it is good others saying its dissspointing

Im at 84 hours in, havent even completed it yet.

Its good

If its your first one youll probably enjoy it. For me it was a let down after 3 and new Vegas, it just felt like more of the same but not as good.

Also was not into the settlement building thing at all but its not a huge deal to ignore it for the most part.

If you look at Fallout 4 as a open world shooter with a mediocre story then you'll probably get some enjoyment out of it. Most people find it underwhelming because it has the weakest RPG elements in the series, but that won't be a big deal for you if you've never touched the other games and don't intend to.

Tru. The only thing 4 did way better than the rest was the huge amount and quality of companion dialogue. Shit's like Bioware in there.

What makes FO4 fun is just running around, exploring, killing stuff, collecting weapons, and the above-average DLC expansions (Far Cry, Nuka-World). You can also build your own settlements which, honestly, has a slightly evergreen quality to it. The menu for doing this is hard to tolerate after Far Cry 5 upped the ante, though.

What sucks about the game is the dumbed-down dialogue and middling campaign. Thankfully, you can wring many hours out of FO4 before you ever think, "huh, maybe I should go do the actual story". There are plenty of good sidequests, too, at least compared to the rest of the game.

Good shooting mechanics, boring world, jawdroppingly stupid story (but not quite as stupid as 3's)

It's definitely an improvement on Bethesda's other attempts but not by an enormous amount. The combat is enjoyable, and if that's enough to carry your interest, go on ahead

If I find 4 at least somewhat enjoyable I will consider it. I mainly bought gamepass again to continue State of Decay 2 lol. And there was a sale. 3 months for the price of 1

I kinda like the world. The Glowing Sea specifically is something the other two 3D Fallout games didn't attempt. Plus, the verticality of downtown Boston is pretty cool. It's definitely better than the Capital Wasteland, which is really reliant on the shock of notable landmarks in decay to keep you invested.

Maybe. I thought Skyrim was great when I first came out but when ever I try to go back to play it I cannot get into it at all and I feel like it doesnt hold up that well but thats just me

I disagree. I still go back to it now and again. I cant play vanilla Skyrim tho. I use some realistic and immersion mods so it is pretty good.

Its one of those games where I enjoyed it for what it was but I can't deny any of the problems people say the game has. It does have a lot of flaws but its still a fun game imo.

I know a lot of fans don't like it because of changes/downgrades from the old games and that its moving away from RPG elements but since you're not a fan and probably don't have any expectations, you might not mind a lot of that stuff.

First time I played it I thought it was pretty bland and watered down for a fallout game . 2nd time I just decided to enjoy it for what it is and had a lot more fun with it.

As much as bethesda has their issues, I really think Fallout is one of the few games I can actually still play that is somewhat interesting. It's still one of the better games this generation that way because it combines story, rpg, exploration and all of that and it has enough depth. Graphics are modern enough etc.

Bethesda games have never pushed the graphics envelope.

What mainstream games really push the envelope at all now? I can't really think of many. Fallout 4 definately doesn't, but does enough.

I could play more indie weird stuff but that's not really my style. I wish there were more games like Fallout and GTA that actually pushed the envelope. They really don't. Mass Effect didn't either HZD. None of these games did.

It's great. People shit on it because that's the cool thing to do, but for every thing that was done poorly, they made two other things 100% better. Honestly, I don't think I could go back to the older ones anymore. 4 had it's flaws, but it was definitely a step in the right direction.

It's a decent fps but the weakest in the series.

No, specific places only. They'll have red workbenches, similar to the one at Sanctuary. Sometimes you just find the bench, other times you have to clear out enemies or complete a quest for the people already living there.

People will want food, beds under roofs, and water. For food harvesting one Settler can gather from 6.0 units of crops: that's 12 plants, or 6 Mutfruit bushes.

With certain perks you can build stores or set up supply lines for crafting.

If you join the Minutemen you can also use the Flaregun to call for reinforcements near your Settlements, once per day. It's effective within about 2 map squares of a Settlement, and you can extend the range a bit by aiming in the direction of your Settlement since the flare itself determines the distance and not your placement. Later on the Minutemen give you access to long range artillery strikes, also once per day, to a range of about 5 map squares from a Settlement with an Artillery piece.

Note that you can build settlements without annoying settlers, if you just want a place to store your crap. If you have the DLC, you can also build helper robots and tame wild animals to act as your property's guard dogs. I remember building a tower at Tenpines Bluff (a.k.a. the crappiest settlement site) and just populated the lower ground with yao guai -- good times.

If you want a quick starter location to build, the Red Rocket station near Sanctuary comes with some stuff, including (I'm pretty sure, anyway) a power armor modification thingy. You can just leave it there when you're not using it, or you run out of cores -- whichever happens first.

PS: I've heard that settlers will take your power armor and walk around in it without permission. Because of this, whenever you leave your armor, it's a good idea to take your power cores with you.

As the other poster mentioned, if you don't pull out the Fusion Core then a Settler(or enemy) can and will steal your shit and refuse to give it back. It's like leaving your keys in your car with the door open.
