If you work for a shitty company that treats you like a piece of meat then yes absolutely fair.

If their boss or coworker finds it, yes.

If some stranger is having an internet argument with them and they snoop through their profile to dig up some 5 year old rant and forward it to their boss, fuck no.

IMO, there are three factors that need to be taken into account:
- The timing. If it's something from a few years before they even started the job, then no, not fair.
- Whether their profile has any links to the business. If their profile states "Employed at ______", then that could justify it. Whereas if it's on an anonymous page, or their profile has no links whatsoever to the business, then not so justified.
- How serious the post is. A post calling for the extermination of a race could justify it, while a pun on a racial slur posted just for the humor definitely doesn't. (Using two extremes here, but you get the point.)

1. Workers should have protections from being unilaterally fired by their boss
2. If it becomes public, the onus shouldn't be on that person's minority coworkers to just assume those views aren't bleeding over into their work. These things have real impacts on the working environment.

Why do people not understand what freedom of speech is? It's the right to say something without the government persecuting you. Hard stop. It doesn't protect you from stuff like employment and school consequences.

If a company feels like it could have a negative impact, then they're left with little choice. Everything comes down to protecting the name.

That's why it's important to have a chill boss, and to keep your profile private. Can't be too careful these days, what with all the 90 year old church ladies ready to ruin your life because you acted like a dumbass in high school.

I use to work with an incredibly racist guy (joined the KKK when he retired, too) and managed not to be racist around the black truck driver we had. He would even have small talk with the guy, too. So, I guess it's possible... but I feel the same as you and I would have my doubts, even though I personally saw evidence prove me wrong.

To what degree your racist rants should impact your employment sort of depends on your job to me.

Medical professionals, cops, etc. should be fired for such things, both for liability reasons as well as the possibility of the actual things that you might be liable for.

Stocker at a grocery store, depends on whether fellow employees are uncomfortable.

I mean we have the Hatch Act which for some government agencies basically reads "Don't ever say anything political" because of perceptions of bias. I don't see why "Don't ever be racist in a public forum (which includes Facebook in most of these cases)" is that bad to also have.
