My favorite thing reading some of the Reddit comments was how some Melee fans are so used to there being two Smash games at EVO, that they read this as him saying that EVO would have both Ultimate an Smash 4, even though it's clear to most that Smash 4 will be dropped for Ultimate (and I believe he said as such before).

Having only Ultimate will be good for just about everyone, and should offer more fighting game diversity with that space normally reserved for Melee now free.

I know Melee is a huge draw and I don't hate the game, but I feel that at this point, it's time to move on.

We all know that; it's getting replaced with Ultimate.

But with what the OP link mentions about Melee players demanding best of 5 for Top 64 (which apparently no other game gets at EVO), as well as logistics regarding playing Melee optimally (it needs old hardware), I can see them at some point--perhaps next year--determining that it's no longer worth it. Not with all of the other fighting games coming out nowadays.

I love Melee and Melee at EVO is pretty much what got me into watching fighting games, but it probably is time they finally drop it.

Melee doesn't need EVO anymore, especially the way these Smash only majors have been growing. Melee and Smash 4's low numbers most likely have to do with

1. Super Smash Con (one of the biggest Smash majors) is a week after EVO, and I'm sure Melee/Smash 4 players are choosing SSC over EVO because...

2. Smash Bros gets treated pretty badly at EVO, especially in 2016. Many top players said they would never come back to EVO after how they handled Smash that year.

3. Smash Ultimate is coming out this year and Bayo/Cloud pretty much killed Smash 4 so a lot of players are most likely choosing to take a break until then

All this. Melee is still good, but IMO has greatly outlived its time at EVO. It probably should have been gone years ago, and I give them credit for keeping it around and still getting fairly big numbers. But at this point, it has to go.

The first comment to that tweet in the first post was from the current best Melee player. I wouldn't say he's throwing a tantrum but he clearly does want Melee to have a permanent spot at EVO.

It probably should be dropped from EVO. Melee will continue to do fine without it

Hungrybox is literally always the outlier among the top players. The previous holder of that title literally constantly says that Melee doesn't need EVO anymore.
