I like RPGs and deeper action/adventure games like Zelda and Super Metroid.

But I'm looking for opinions on a few games/series:

1. Phantasy star. Are they good? Do I need to play them in order? If not, which should I play?
2. Shining force. Same questions.
3. Dragon Warrior?
4. Any other good SNES, Genesis, or GB games that fall into those genres?
5. Best Pokemon game before they went 3d? SNES classic can handle GB but not DS
6. FFIV, V, both, or neither? I played VI. Very good but I don't hold it in as high regard as Chrono Trigger.

You don't need to okay them in order. I've only played 2 and 4, and they were both good.

I don't know about the continuity of shining force. I've only played the first or second one, but it was good.

My personal favorite location is hoenn, which is generation 3 (Ruby, sapphire, emerald).

I honestly think that Pokemon gets better every generation due to the addition of features. As such, gen 3 would be the best for you to get on your snes mini. So either get emerald, or get firered/leafgreen, which are remakes of the first Pokemon games, and are quite good.

Pretty much all Dragon Warrior/Quest games are worth playing. I've played the entire series up to 8, and enjoy the old school turn based combat the games provide.
I also feel the same way about the Final Fantasy entries available on the classic. Pretty much all of them are worth playing, and tend to, imo, have a better story than the Dragon Warrior/Quest games from the same release period.

I am one of the few who thinks FF IV is better than FF VI. I also think FF IX was the best in the series, not FF VII.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I prefer the medieval knight, black/white mage setting of IV and IX more than the steampunk setting of VI and VII.

I assume that thing can play Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia then.

Shining Force is an awesome series. As for Phantasy Star, they were decent, but I'm not a fan. Dragon Quest is awesome but grindy as hell. Final Fantasy V is my favourite of the classic games.

You need two games:
- Star Ocean
- Tales of Phantasia

The end.

Honestly, the only time for me when it felt like a downgrade was the jump from xy to sun/moon

You're the second person to mention them but I'm unfamiliar. What are they like? What makes them exceptional?

both star ocean and tales of phantasia (and all their sequels) are kinda similar. they are action rpgs. you get into battles, and you are in a 2d plain (3d in the newer games) and you use basic attacks and skills to kill stuff. It all takes place in real time, and is sorta similar to figting games.

Edit: The first star ocean is actually very different though.
