I gave in to temptation and bought it. Between the Amazon Prime preorder discount and some credit I had on my account, I only paid $34 out of pocket for it.

I am loving it so far. The aesthetic is pretty old school SNES jrpg, but it has a modern polish that works well for it.

There are other great games on Switch though.

I'd say not on its own, but if you have your eye on things like BotW or Odyssey or Xenoblade and were theoretically "on the fringe" of pulling the trigger, then I'd say yes Octopath is reason to pull the trigger if you want those other games as well.

I bought mine for Mario Odyssey. I'd say if you didn't own a Wii U then the Switch is a no-brainer, since the Switch has ports of some of the best, 10/10 Wii U games. It's also got portable Hollow Knight and some unique little indie titles like Golf Story and Celeste.

Octopath is a great game on its own-- certainly a highlight for me. The story I've seen so far doesn't have the tone or scope of FF6 but everything else about the game feels like the ultimate evolution of FF6 to me.

Look at the other games on Switch and ask yourself if you'd ever play them after you finished Octopath Traveler.

I do wish they would port over a few more Wii U games. Especially Wonderful 101. Maybe Super Mario 3D World and Xenoblade Chronicles X. All games that didn't get enough of an audience because of the console they launched on.

That game on it's own is not enough just to buy a console exclusively for. Getting a console is an investment so unless there's other games you want on the switch, it should be a hard pass.

While we all played Windwaker and Twilight Princess a few times, I'd still want to see the HD Remakes ported as well as maybe bringing Skyward Sword(with motion control optional maybe? :( )

Octopath is great though...one of my favorite rpgs and I usually prefer playing rpgs with a lot of chunk in story...doesn't make the game bad though.

So far, I only have one nitpick with the game.

The Chapter 1 for each character is always some exposition dump to inform the player about who the character is and sometimes it feels a bit clunky. Like in Ophilia's story, it starts with her and her sister summarizing how Ophilia was adopted by their family 15 years prior.

That spoiler isn't much of a spoiler because it occurs within the first minute or so of her chapter.

If they do make a Xenoblade X port, I hope they change some minor things to make the game better, like the method for recruiting party members can be done on "call" as long as you're in NLA instead of having to find them at seemingly random locations, or the Skell flying theme only coming on after you've been flying for a few seconds instead of immediately after leaving the ground.

Also hope they make a way to get the online-exclusive items offline, because what's gonna happen when the online is taken down? You won't be able to get certain equipment.

i caved in and bought a Switch and Octopath Traveler. with a case and screen protector the total came out to $433.47

will have to pick up a few more games eventually. like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey.
