The first incident involves a manager (white) calling the police on a woman (black) who wanted to use a coupon that apparently did not work. The woman followed one of the managers around and at some point began filming. No racist comments were made. The only mention of race was when the employee was being asked the description of the customer. "African American", he stated. The customer then responded saying she was "black" and that "black" isn't a bad word.

The second incident involves a violent brick assault by a group of black people on an elderly individual and the victim was told to "Go back to Mexico". The victim was Hispanic.

Here are two examples of how media chose their headlines in each case, but in only one case, race was mentioned in the headlines (and base of article).

White man, black customer

"CVS apologizes after white manager calls police on black customer over coupon" - NBC

"CVS Fires 2 for Calling Police on Black Woman Over Coupon" - NY TIMES

Black woman, Hispanic victim.
