um, what? if anything I generally found people who are anti-Donald Trump to be the types who would promote 1984 type shit

like aren't there those more left wing sites who deemed archiving sites to be "alt-right" because they archived their conflicting articles and fake news?

The extremes of both sides would like a 1984-like society. They just have different ideas on the finer details of it.

Trump is nowhere near that extreme. It's hard to tell if Clinton would have gone that far, I get the impression she would have liked to, but probably would not have actually managed to.

You pretty much have to look to either what fringe movements want, or outside the US, to find actual examples that come anywhere near 1984.

Eh, the most 1984-esque quality of Trump imo is his relationship with the truth. And his super simple language I suppose, but that's a stretch. The mounting persecution of latinx people is scary but at least to me it doesn't look Orwellian.

Prosecuting illegal immigrants =/= persecuting latinos, and it doesn't matter how often you insist its the same thing.

I don't like Trump either, but at the moment, The UK is higher in the 1984 scale.

Though, Trumps...loose definition of the truth and "Fake News" does bring him up a peg on the scale

Yeah, the UK has had some pretty unsettling cases in the last couple of years. And they have some weird laws from the past as well. John Oliver showed some instance of how his show was literally censored in the UK because he played a video from parliament. Apparently it's still illegal to broadcast footage from parliament in a comedic context. They're pretty weird over there.

If Trump brings a 1984-style dystopia, the organization that will have total power over everyone's life will be privately run instead of being the government. Won't make much of a difference when you have a small group of people who have that kind of power over everyone else.

The UK is pretty awful in this regard, yup. Most certainly with the recent internet laws we've passed and sweeping control the government has over it.

Trump is pretty bad in how he is discrediting the media and pushing people to believe only whatever bullshit he spews out, no matter the fact it gets discredited mere seconds after he's said it.

I honestly think his dialect is 100% intentional. Look at how well-spoken his kids are for the most part.

There's no way his vocabulary is as limited as he makes it out to be. The only time people got annoying with discussing how he speaks is when they were trying to correlate it with intelligence... Smaller words are a lot more concrete, easier to remember, etc compared to language typically used by scholars...A lot less room for misinterpretation although the media goes out of its way to misinterpret things and I think he played the shit out of them.

Trump's a player, plain and simple. I think his opponents (at least the vocal ones) are getting played the worst, followed by his strong support base. Not talking your mom's and pop's voting for the lesser of two evils, but the guys on infowars and stuff. Played like a fiddle.

I don't think he would. The dude is a textbook narcissist which means he wants reactions out of people and it doesn't matter if it's good or bad. Think about it, he always seems to say something that gets reported on endlessly. Good attention, bad attention...It's still fucking attention.

I think the reason the vocal left hates him so much is because they're just as narcissistic as he is. I think the reason the fringe right loves him is because they're slugs in human form.

If you want to hear 1984-esque attitudes, listen to Lindsay Shepherd being bullied and interrogated by her professors in Canada. Lindsay is left leaning (or at least would be by U.S. standards). She doesn't like or agree with Jordan Peterson, but made the horrible mistake of showing a video clip of him expressing his opinions (which actually aired on a public Canada tv channel) to her students. Somehow, these professors got wind of it and went full thought police on her.

"Latinx" means "Latina or Latino". From what I've heard, if you use that term around actual Latino / Latina people (except those who are US-born, never been to a Latino country in their life, don't even speak Spanish, and are way into the SJW movement), you'll get mocked to hell and back.

Why are people from like South America referred to as "Latino/a" but nobody who spoke Latin lived anywhere close to that. Like, a ton of people there are of Spanish descent and that wasn't even where the Latin language originated.

Obviously. In Spanish, Portuguese, etc, the male form takes precedence when the group includes both, so then it would be Latino. But I'm not typing this in Spanish. But I'll use Latino henceforth if you're bothered by it.

ThunderMuffin posted...

Do you actually not get it? Let's see. In America (as well as any other country) people commit more crimes and misdemeanors than there are resources to deal with. This is true everywhere. For example, there aren't enough cops to prevent people from smoking weed, or jaywalking, or whatever else might be illegal but deemed not so bad. That's where the executive branch comes in. At their discretion, they direct law enforcment to go after certain crimes and misdemeanors through policy.
Trump's zero-tolerance policy is definitely aimed at Latino people. It's costly, it's resulted in separations of children and parents, and it's inefficient. There were programs in place before this policy that worked quite well. People did show up to their hearings, and they did abide by the court decisions. Not to mention the fact that crime rates are lower among "illegal immigrants" than among Americans.
There's another argument as well. Many of these families are fleeing really rough, gang-dominated environments. Gangs that the US helped make possible. You often hear people talk about how horrible MS-13 is, and that's what they're running from. And the US shares the blame for the existence of such gangs. Is it then very humane to arrest people and separate them from their kids when they're running to the US, just because they committed a misdemeanor? It's not a big crime.

So to answer your question, why shouldn't an illegal act be punished? There can be several reasons for it. It's too costly to seek out and punish offenders, it's too inefficient, it's not humane, etc.
