This feels like one of those reviews where the number doesn't match the tone of the review I think. He praises the battle system but basically criticizes almost every other aspect of the game. Is the battle system really good enough to carry some of those flaws to a 9.3?

the review seemed to praise the combat, graphics, exploration and story, at least to me

Only minor criticism i noticed was that the reviewer felt the story wasn't grandiose enough

Not that I'm planning to buy this, but if i were in a jrpg mood i most likely would

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

One thing of note seems to be that there's some kind of post-game epilogue content that no reviewer took the time to figure out (or rather, they haven't even had the time).

From Kotaku's review:
NOTE: Theres been a lot of confusion over whether Octopath Travelers eight stories overlap or lead to some sort of epilogue. After finishing all eight, weve seen nothing like that. Its not clear whether the game contains any sort of bonus endgame contentNintendo says that it does, but the publisher could not tell us before publication what that content is or how to access it, only saying that it was a matter of completing the storylines and some side quests.

And someone with a review copy who's been posting on the OT board (he's posted video proof) said this:

Let me comment on this, because I couln't talk about anthing before today.
I still haven't managed to finish all 8 stories, but I have finished 4 and I have to say that thematically, each of them is implying that it leads to something bigger then the story itself. Now I would have been dismissing that as nothing, but in these endings it is a reoccuring theme, so I would be very very surprised if there was not some sort of endgame content this leads to.
I have noticed that characters form stories that I have finished start to populate the world and hand out quests, so it's just a matter of following those threads I imagine.
Now, I'm not saying that this will turn into an epic single story JRPG plot, but signs are still there that there is a payoff for all this and everyone who I have seen claiming otherwise has blindly rushed through the game as far as I can tell.

It's kind of refreshing to see a game like this where everything isn't already known before release, and we could still be surprised by something.

Or there really is just nothing lol.

the kotaku review is so bad. basically just complaints about old-school jrpgs in general.

like it doesn't matter if the stories don't converge, or if one of the side characters doesnt take over during another character's story

one of my favorite things about old-school jrpg's was "filling in the gaps" in what was already a pretty good story. like in FFVI, when you had to split the party up, I always imagined what the other characters were doing/saying to each other.

As a person who spent hours and hours getting every character in FFVI to master every spell as new espers became available, or had to have all four characters master all 24 jobs in Bravely Default, or did literally every new quest in Xenoblade as they became available, the complaints about the game being grindy and repetitive have absolutely no impact on me.

I just maxed out the characters I cared about.

It wasnt as bad as maxing out stats (and farming luck spheres) on the sphere grid for FFX

Well, you've got to get the economizers, and there were spells every character had to have, but I think I let a few of them go.

Anyway. It sounds a lot like what people said about Bravely Default when it came out. I couldn't bother seeing that through to the end.

I think my favorite part of these reviews is that according to Nintendo there is some sort of endgame content after you complete all the stories and do some side quests but no reviewer has been able to play enough to see it

Still some mystery to the game

I guess the Japanese strategy guide has definitively answered the question. There is a post-game final dungeon and boss. I didn't read the topic on the OT board to find out more details, like if it's a group effort type of final chapter, but the topic is there on the first page right now clearly labeled if anyone wants to check it out.

My copy only just shipped this morning so I probably won't be able to start playing until Tuesday (going out of town Sunday and won't be back until late afternoon Tuesday). =/

Half tempted to download now and just return the shipped copy for store credit somewhere...

and by half tempted i mean the download has 20 minutes left
