Great game. I forget the exact build but I think I played an empath illusionist. Heals and crowd control . . so easy finding groups lol.

I quit sometime before Villains came out. :\

City of Heroes was one of my favorite games from my middle school/high school years. I would literally play it for hours and was pissed that NCSoft just totally dropped the project, especially when the game was still profitable and the development team had so many future plans in place.

It's also one of the few freemium games where you felt like you got a lot of content even when just playing the game for free (though I was a member long before that).

I actually remember finding out my 8th grade science teacher was a diehard fan of the game and we would run missions together every night >_>

Villains was great, and Going Rogue made the game even better since you could switch sides.

To this day, I'm still not sure why this game couldn't have been preserved in some shape or form. It's not like the development team started getting greedy or having less passion for the game, or a couple of bad business practices screwed the game over.

It had a loyal fanbase until the very end with players that loved the game and no significant decline in numbers and then was suddenly dropped.

My favorite MMO and one of my favorite games of all time. The community is really what made the game shine.

Friend once told me his character was pretty low level, and some high level chump tried to screw with him but my friend's character ended up winning by using some clever tricks.

The other guy was so shocked that he pretended that didn't happen lol.

Yeah, that game has bar none the best community I've ever seen in an online game. Players were always polite and willing to help newbies out, even going so far as to run low-level missions with them even when there wasn't much reward in it for themselves.

It needed a ton of polishing but it was a solid gaming experience.

Maybe I'm a forever jaded curmudgeon from the past MMOs (UO, Shadowbane, CoH, WoW) but there just aren't any decent ones out anymore.
Tons of crappy Korean ones, Black Desert, that one with the slutty dark elves . . . I just can't do it anymore.

I played it for a bit. This was back with my iMac which had a 7600 GT. The game didn't run well for me, but from what I could tell, it was a pretty fun game.

People in The Secret World were also oftentimes very helpful like this, but they butchered that game :(

I remember first hearing about the game shutting down and the development team posted about it, essentially saying they were working on new content and then suddenly found out day of that their office would be shutting down along with the game.

And then the development team tried to purchase the rights to license so they could keep it going under a new publisher, and NCSoft basically told them fuck off.

It's still a sore spot for me.

It is strange for them to close a profitable game without selling the IP, like why even do that other than to be an asshole

The problem was that despite the game having an extremely loyal North American fanbase, NCSoft's eyes were focused on the Korean market, and the game was not doing well over there because superhero games typically didn't do well in Korea.

Of course, this was all before the big superhero media boom brought about by the MCU.

I had a electricity blaster hero named Shockstastic Man. the show Black Lightning and the Infamous games series remind me of that guy.

I also had a Mastermind villain that summoned like thugs or mafia guys or whatever and I called him The Accountant. I think he dressed like a nerdy guy. like he was a techie who could control thug minions to carry out his orders

that game was cool. from what I remember it shouldn't have been ended but the parent company suddenly for no reason just closed it down with no warning even to the developers. they had a new expansion in the works even, at the time. I dont think an explanation on why it happened ever has come out really
