They can be. I did a Mediterranean cruise that gave me the opportunity to visit places I'd never have gone while still having a safe place to return to at the end of the day, and I made sure to have shore excursions at every port so I was constantly out and about. The trick is to treat cruises like mobile hotels and not the vacation itself.

They're a good option if you want to visit a few different countries on one trip. If you're looking to go on one just for a vacation it's kind of pricey and you could get more bang for your buck just going to a nice resort.

I have to actually explore a place on my own. I don't want to be on some itinerary with loads of yokels.

I think we're going to go up to New England next year for our relaxing vacation and take my car that way we can drive around to other places.

Theme cruises sound even more ridiculous to me. I guess it's okay if you're a mega fan of something, but who the hell goes on like the Kiss Kruise?

As someone who's worked on a cruise ship, no.

It's just a big hotel that you can't leave, and are 1000% more likely to catch a cold in.

They're easily worth experiencing once. Its an easy vacation where you don't really have to plan all that much and you get to do stuff at numerous locations. Food has always been good and the entertainment has always been able to keep my attention when not on excursions

It's not really a vacation you would really want to do more than once or twice though

That's what it sounds like to me honestly. I guess it's okay if you're lazy and don't want to plan your vacation, but I want to go eat locally, try the local beer, see sites on my own time, etc...

We went to Las Vegas and had an absolute blast because we did what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it. I couldn't imagine being on a guided tour where I had to do what was on the schedule

In a vacuum, no, not really.

I go on them either annually or biannually, but do so with a large group of friends I've been in contact with since college. A lot of us have moved or coupled up and are generally way less social than we were a decade+ ago, but we book a cruise together and use it as a chance to come together, catch up, and hang out.

It's a floating hotel with fun enough amenities and all you can eat (ie, prepaid) food. We've tried some group outings where we were stuck cooking and cleaning for ourselves and it just cut way too much into the social time and less than half of us actually contributed to the domestic duties. A cruise covers that part for us.

Going alone or just with one friend... you'll get bored on day 3, probably. Leverage excursions while on land as best you can.

They're good to see a bunch of places in a 7-14 day span. There's a bunch of stuff to do on the ship also during the sea days. You will gain weight since there is food available all over the place 24/7 so that's a downside of it.

I've been on six cruises in my life and I love them. They are a lot different as an adult than when you're a kid, though... in some respects they become a little more stressful as you realize you have a limited amount of time and you want to experience as much as you can, and each year there are newer and newer ships with newer and better things... like cruises with long ass water slides, ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls, go-kart tracks... it's ridiculous.

The last one I went on was a couple years ago, it was a great experience and I met some really awesome people and it was fun just hearing their stories and what their experiences and impressions were about everything.

I would also argue that someone who worked on a ship is going to have a far different perspective on the matter than someone who goes on it for fun... sort of like how someone who works at a fast food restaurant might be less inclined to go there in their free time because of what they see, smell, etc.

I don't think it's something I would enjoy. How long are the stays at the Port locations for?

I'd hate to feel rushed.

Port calls are anywhere from "a day" (8-14 hours) to an overnight thing, just depends on the itinerary.

Excursions are an additional cost but they have a huge range of activities on offer.

They're huge, and you really don't have to deal with a "ton of old people and screeching children" tbh. It's not like an airplane lol.
