The curved blade struck her in the throat, Cata was sure, but he didn't see the skin on her neck break open. He didn't see the surging waterfall of blood that must have cascaded across her blouse in that instant as she was torn apart and set free. Cata couldn't see her face in the dark, but, even if he did... There was no way he could have taken the time to know what she was thinking in the moment of her death. There was a gargling sound, a dripping and dropping sound. The noise of a heavy weight striking the ground. A quiet corpse, a quiet end. She wasn't the first to die down here in the dark. She wouldn't be the last. He knew that now. He understood it. Cata began to weep more openly as the understanding dawned on him as well. Maria wasn't going to be the only sacrifice. A snarling toothed jackal grabbed him and pulled his body across the ground. Rocks dug into his face and his blood smeared across the ground from one totem to the next. Cata, he... Cata... he felt a chuckle rise within his body, his ribs rattling with amusement. Did Maria figure it out before the end too? The extreme irony of that picture they spotted from above... Cata solved the mystery right then and there. There was no meaning to the picture. Those lines weren't painted intentionally. Gods above and below.... Cata was crying tears as he approached the end. Every line was just the stain left behind by another human sacrifice. "What do you think?" A voice asked him, a voice that was now completely shrouded in darkness. Cata thought that he saw the hooded visage above him, looking down at him, but there was no way a human's eyes could adjust to this kind of blackness. He might as well take a guess at what might be looking down at him. For all he knew it could be a ghost or a god or a devil. Cata thought that this guy was probably insane. If it even was a man, and not some monster. "You're looking at him right now, aren't you? You bastard..." Frantically, desperately, the one above him began to mutter to himself again. "You can see the formless God. I've brought you here, to the end, in order to see it, and you can't even thank me!" He was shaking his head now, Cata heard the noise of the fabric moving. "No. No!" "It's not just that. I know that you can't thank me because the sight is too wonderful to behold." Cata squinted into the lack of light, trying to make it out, trying to see what this man was talking about. "The reason I am filled with hatred, with jealousy, and yet with such divine sense of wonder is because.. right now... you must be looking at the thing I want to see, more than anything else in the world. And I can bring you there, I can, because I know him, I know that formless God." "So, after all of this, why am I the only one who can't see him?" And Cata, thought, maybe... maybe he did see something. It was dark, and it might have just been a trick that his eyes played on him. Perhaps the last lingering light was casting shapes across his iris that were being processed by his brain in a way that couldn't be fully quantified. Perhaps he saw his life flashing before his eyes, and maybe it didn't look the same as how other people described it. Maybe all of those memories and emotions were condensed down into the form of a single, shifting phase. And this was the place where angels came to die. Then, before his eyes, the crescent moon began to rise... splitting the vision in two. This wasn't just about seeing him. Things couldn't be that simple. It's because he was going to meet him, soon. The only way to see this God of Death was if you were about to die. Cata understood now. He understood it so badly that it hurt. He understood something that this deranged cult lunatic could never understand. Now that, that, that, that, that, that, that.... it was a painful irony, wasn't it? "No, not the moon..." Cata mouthed the words, but nothing came out. The air and the blood had been drained from his body. The last of all of the tears in his reality formed, and it began to run down his cheek. "It was the sun I wanted to see. Just one last time." It wasn't fair, was it? Then, as if answering a prayer, a brilliant light began to shine from the south. It was so sad, and so distant, but somehow Cata was grateful that he was able to see it in the final moment. Just then, the moon crashed into him and ended his life. With a single stroke, it was all cut cleanly and fully to the end of the script. It was funny. What kind of ending was this for a noble scion, who had gone off to find adventure and mystery... treasure and fame... maybe even love. Was it possible for such a grand story to end in such an instant and final way? When did he lose control of the situation? Why hadn't he been given a choice in the matter? Well, for what it was worth, Cata was briefly happy for the final Miracle that appeared before him. Perhaps that was the best conclusion he could have hoped for... [End] 18. Fakeru would probably take it hard but would have the strength to endure and probably live for those who were lost, etc, etc. So a tragic end, but with a touch of light at the end of the tunnel. If Zephyr is, however... yea,the survivors' guilt will make for a tragic end indeed. Either physically, or mentally.
