A group of Finnish researchers have discovered several new Amazonian species, including a parasitoid wasp with a massive stinger. The species' stinger is not only long, but also wide.

Clistopyga crassicaudata belongs to a genus of wasps that prey on spiders. The wasps use their stingers to both inject venom and lay eggs. Before depositing its eggs in the abdomens of web-building spiders, the parasitoid wasps paralyze their victims with a quick injection of venom.

When the wasp eggs hatch, the larva eat the paralyzed spider -- and the spider's eggs, if they're available.

"We do not know for sure which spider this wasp species prefers," researchers wrote in a news release.

Researchers have previously witnessed Clistopyga enclosing their paralyzed victims in their own webs, suggesting their stinger serves a multitude of functions.

"The insect we were studying at the time could use its stinger as an intricate felting needle," said Ilari E. Sksjrvi, professor at the University of Turku. "The giant stinger of the current species is very likely a highly sophisticated tool as well, but unfortunately we can only guess at its purpose."

Is this actually real? That looks pretty much exactly like a Giant Ichneumon, or at least another wasp in the Ichneumon family. They can't sting. They have a long protrusion that looks like a stinger but is an ovipositor, which in the case of the Giant Ichneumon is like 2+ inches long and is used to bore into trees or logs where the wasp lays eggs on the larvae of other wasps. Considering this looks identical and if real is probably related, I have a hard time believing that wasp is even capable of stinging.

I don't know if this is the exact species (don't click this link if you can't stand close ups of bugs) but I was in Zambia last summer and these motherfucking giant wasps the length of your palm were totally co-inhabitants of a rural district health office I was visiting. Like, they just buzzed along the ceilings, up and down the hallways, in and out of offices, and occasionally around right in front of your face. It was horrible, I have no idea how the people who worked there dealt with it every day (pretty nonchalantly, I guess it worked...)

Was the abdomen extremely long and thin? If so, could have been an American Pelecinid (not sure on spelling). I've seen both those and the Giant Ichneumon and they are terrifying as fuck (even though Ichneumons don't sting. Not sure about the other one)

Ya super long and thin. I'll look that up real quick and check.

Edit: yup, it was that little fucker alright.

Second edit: wait, do they all have those wings that look like dragonflies? This ones wings didn't look so clear like that and I the stinger didn't curl.

It doesn't curl while they are flying, but yes, in flight they do kinda look dragonflyish, more like damselflies, which are similar but thinner like these fuckers. The curl is sorta their "signature" look but they aren't always like that. Same with ichneumons. The wasp is normally probably 4-5 inches long with the ovipositor extended and just looks like a normal wasp with a long-ass thing sticking out of it, but when laying eggs, they are hunched up with the ovipositor curled around and stuck down into the wood, which has a very distinct look and they are often photographed in that pose.

Edit: looks like the long abdomen is in fact for ovipositing. The males have a more traditional wasp appearance (and are apparently rare and eggs don't need to be fertilized. Didn't know that before lol)

yep, OP is another ichneumonid :D

Yep. I looked up the first part of the name. Wikipedia had a bunch listed for it, all red links though and this one wasn't there so so newly discovered checks out. Seems unlikely that they sting in a conventional sense. More than likely the venom is just to sedate the spider to make egg-laying easier. My guess is you could be holding one of these wasps and pissing it off and you wouldn't get stung... not that I would have the balls to try that >_>. They are still terrifying looking and when I had a Giant Ichneumon at work, I had a co-worker deal with it and get it outside. Granted I didn't know that species didn't sting at the time. Still, I wouldn't handle it differently now. Fucker was not pleased to be trapped in a plastic container, sting or no sting. I would not want it flying in my face or crawling me. I hope I don't ever see another one.
