This happened years before I was born, and my sister just disclosed all the details to me, considering Sunday would have been his 46th birthday.

He and another sibling (2 year old and 3 year old) were playing in our parents bedroom, and the older one managed to climb to the top of the closet, using a chair and a box fan, and get a hold of the revolver that was up there. How he knew it was there, I am not sure. While this was happening, our mother was in the kitchen trying to discipline two other siblings (Teenage boys) for being delinquents, as they had been breaking into people's homes and stealing.

By this time, the two toddelers had the gun and were playing with it on the bed. They thought it was just a toy and didn't understand the concept of a deadly weapon. As they played with it, the younger one held the gun up against his chest, and older one pulled the trigger. A loud "POP" resounded thorought the home. My sister discribed the sound like a soda pop bottle exploding, and she thought that's what it was as she was walking up the stairs from the basment (she was 10 at the time).

Of course, everyone went to investigate the noise. When they entered the bedroom, Daniel (2 year old) was setting upright on the bed, and simply said "Oh, momma" as he reached for Mom. Our mother rushed to him, fearing what had happened, and noticed a spot of red on his chest. She urgently unzipped his onsie, and saw the red hole in his chest, right where his heart is. He said "Mommy" and then his eyes rolled into the back of his head. Our mom cried out "GOD! PLEASE DON'T LET MY BABY SUFFER!". Mom then had one of the delinquent boys (14, no license) rush her to the hospital, as she held the baby. Daniel was dead on arrival, probably died before they even got in the vehicle.

During all of this, police were called to the scene by some of the siblings who stayed behind (my sister being one of them). When the local sheriff arrived, he located the 3 year old, which everyone had forgotten about in all the commotion. He was hiding under the bed where he had just shot his brother. The 3 year old was scared and said to the sherrif "I'm gonna be in trouble. I'm gonna get a spanking because I just shot my brother". The cop could see that it was a tragic accident.

Our father was a trucker, so he wasn't home and wasn't even aware of what had just transpired. Red cross had to hunt him down off his route to tell him. Took them a day or two. He returned home immediatly, and my sister said that that was the first time she had ever seen him cry. He quit trucking after that event.

Our mother was messed up for a long time after the funeral, and had to be put on nerve pills.

Thoughts?

Another sad thing, the 3 year old didn't understand the concept of death. Days after the funeral, he was still asking mommy where his brother was, and when he was gonna be back from heaven.

I mean, I'd have to imagine it would still be pretty traumatic finding out/realizing what had happened years later.

I didn't know the details. I knew that I had a brother who died before I was born, and that he was shot in the heart by another brother. I knew that it was an accident, and I knew that it was a tragedy, but other than that... I just didn't know much. My sister disclosed the fine print to me over dinner Sunday afternoon. Her, her husband, one of her sons and myself all went out to eat at Cheddar's. I forget how the conversation came about, but we defintely didn't start the dinner with "hey, let's talk about our dead bro". The convo DEFINITELY killed the mood, and I think we all left the resturant depressed and kinda staring off into nothingness.

She seemed okay, all things considered. I came years later, tho. She probably had some time to recover.

I guess technically our brother, but I wasn't around at the time.

Sorry to lay this down on ya'll. Legit not trying to ruin days.

It's hard to read, I know. Hell, it's hard to write. I wasn't even there, and never had the oppurnity to meet him. I often wonder what type of personality he would have had. It sucks that tragedy like this happens

That is really terrible to hear.

Odd question, but how old was your mom when she had you? Seems like she was quite old given the facts of the story.

40.

She got married at 13 and had her first child the same age. We're talking back in the mid to late 50s. Apperently, it was acceptable back then. More acceptable in the south than in the north.

I have a 3 year old, and couldn't imagine this. Him looking at me after he had been shot in the heart. There's... There's just no way. I don't think I could survive that. Innocent little boy getting taken away.

I'm not religious (more agnostic than anything) but I guarantee you I'd be begging God for mercy in that moment.

My cousin accidentally shot and killed his little sister when I was little. She was trying ro take the family car out (she was 11 and a terror) and her 13yo brother who was put in charge/babysitting tried to stop her by shooting a rifle over her head. Guess he didn't realize how heavy it was, shot her in the head.

I know he drank himself to death about 15 years later.
