Suspension is temporary and for technical reasons. Basically, moderators can't do anything more severe than warnings (maybe this isn't true for lead mods anymore, not sure). If they find a message that, either because of how bad it is or because of the poster's history, needs more than a warning, they suspend. Admins (or maybe lead mods nowdays) then review the moderation within a day or two, and act accordingly. If no action is taken, a suspension would theoretically last forever, although in practice I don't think I've ever heard of it taking more than a couple of days. Basically, moderators can't do anything more severe than warnings (maybe this isn't true for lead mods anymore, not sure). If they find a message that, either because of how bad it is or because of the poster's history, needs more than a warning, they suspend. Admins (or maybe lead mods nowdays) then review the moderation within a day or two, and act accordingly. If no action is taken, a suspension would theoretically last forever, although in practice I don't think I've ever heard of it taking more than a couple of days. I think both of mine were a week and two weeks. It's was never anything all that horrible, just a sequence of bad posting decisions all in one night when drunk CEing.
