It was but all but the lowest quality NES games were still miles ahead of the average 2600 game. There are like five good 2600 games, and most of them were released years (to decades) after the NES came out.

In case you didn't know, you have to be at least 13 years old to post on this website.

There's some real good classic NES games, but most games on that system don't hold up too well today. Games like Mario and Mega Man are timeless, though.

I actually found an adapter that you can attach on the SNES to play NES games. There was also one for Genesis.

maybe 100 "This was pretty good when all its competition was other even worse NES games" but there's probably like 10-20 NES games I'd consider actually good now

I have far more nostalgia for the SNES than I do the NES (even though we did own one after we got a SNES, though the only good game we had was the Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt compilation).

As such, it's rather hard for me to get into them, whereas I could always go back to my favorite SNES games.

So you're either unfairly judging older games by modern standards

there are a lot of NES games that are just good games. platformers and run and guns haven't changed so drastically that Contra or Mega Man would be considered bad games today. Obviously we would wonder about some qualify of life things and the graphics primarily, but yeah

imo

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with judging older games by modern standards. After all, things like the NES classic are still being released today. These games aren't existing entirely in just the memories of people back then; they are being officially rereleased in the same environment as all modern games we play now.

If anything it feels unfair not to compare them

How is fair to compare Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Odyssey without taking the former's age into context?

because nowadays, if I was going to play one of the two, my choices are not:

1) Play mario odyssey
2) Go into a time machine to 1985 and also erase all my memories of how gaming advanced and then play super mario bros

They're:

1) Play mario odyssey
2) Play super mario bros

Yes, one is older. Yes, the older one looks bad in comparison because things tend to get better over time as new advancements are made. Would you rather have a modern HD TV or a black and white CRT TV? Just because it's revolutionary for its time doesn't necessarily mean it's still good now.

plus, by being reluctant to compare like this it means you're also missing the stuff SMB might do better than odyssey, like having a higher difficulty, streamlined design instead of a ton of meandering side objectives, lower commitment due to shorter play time + fast startup -> play, and (for those who really hate motion controls) no motion controls

I guess I should add that I don't think "revolutionary/impactful" and "good" are necessarily the same thing. I'm definitely not faulting SMB1 for its massive impact on the industry and basically setting a ton of standards for games for a loooong time. But unfortunately those pieces of history don't make the game extra fun to play nowadays or anything unless you just want to see firsthand what started all this

How is fair to compare Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Odyssey without taking the former's age into context? Why judge a new game now, when it will look like shit compared to games 30 years from now?

Because enormous budgets and fancy graphics aren't what makes a game good. It's not because of historical context that my top ten list is filled almost exclusively with games 5+ years old.

Were you even there in the 80s?
Imagine being a kid who's saved his allowance for several months, and buys the game with the awesome ninja on the front and neat screenshots on the back. Then, he ends up with this:

Rental stores were an absolute godsend back then. They let us waste $2 on shitty games instead of $40.

Doesn't matter. All the good games shit on the bad ones from that library.

they were either always good or always bad.

well I guess that's where our main point of disagreement lies, since I think of qualifying things as good/bad as an inherently comparison-based metric and a game that was at one point "good" can definitely become "not good" as the environment around it and the other available options change

Today sure, but BC in the 90's would have crushed Sega even harder if they could manufacture the console without raising the MSRP too much
