I thought the current British accent was a much more noble accent in the old days while the neutral accent in America was the more widespread accent in Britain. Also, there's not just one southern accent since I've met people from Texas who talk differently than people from Louisiana. Louisiana's southern accent is probably attributed to the French in some way. There were multiple country accents and dialects, many of which remain in small communities in Britain, as well as broader regional accents (e.g. Northern, Midland, Welsh, etc.).
