They confirmed some kind of 5 minigame gauntlet you can do online against people with cycling minigames, and leaderboards, but then said they couldn't say anything else.

Just the fact there's online at all is surprising, though I wish it'd extend to full games.

I dont think the screen linking one is required at all even in local, so you could just not have it be part of online. I could be wrong on that though.

There is no way Nintendo puts true online in Mario Party(Some sort of short minigame thing wouldn't surprise me, but full experience nope).

I know Nintendo is a dinosaur with online, but in fairness a full game of online Mario Party could present difficulties like what to do about people quitting or being disconnected. With friends that might not be an issue, but with randoms Im sure there would be people quitting when theyre losing. If everybody quit on you the game would end and youd have to try again. I mean they can definitely do something to make it work, but they gotta make the effort.

Yeah it's called Mario-Thon for the Online

You can do a cycle of 5 random minigames vs Randoms or your friends. Highest score at the end of the 5 wins I assume.

Leaderboards / Rewards etc as well. Nothing else for online mentioned atm

Yeah, I do agree that there's definitely some difficulty in getting full board play to work. You can't just have the game end if somebody drops out, so what do you do? Do you just drop them from the game? Though that could cause balance issues. Do you replace them with AI? It's something I can understand them taking some time to tackle.

Can you name some games that actually do this? I'm used to mostly seeing games just drop the player or end.

And even then, they'd have to have a system for the player coming back in and getting their spot from the AI back, since Mario Party games tend to be much longer than your typical match/round/whatever of other online games, so connection drops and such are bound to happen.

You could, but then the 1v3 or 2v2 mini-games might not be so fair depending on how good/bad the AI is. There arent really a lot of those, but I cant imagine anybody would want to be teamed up with the AI if anybody did quit since real players would more than likely be better. It being an AI would still be preferable to it being a new player that gets to keep the coins and stars the quitter had though. Like I said they definitely could make it work. It just doesnt seem like they want to for whatever reason. A fair amount of us might actually WANT a new Mario Party if it meant we could play full matches online with friends.

I'd love to get this, but I dread having to get two more Switch controllers at the price they are to have a four person game going on.

Oh, well that'd explain why I never see it.

Didn't know that about Rocket League, though I haven't played it much.

I'm not trying to say they can't do it, I'm moreso wondering how well it'd work for a 45-100 long game, compared to much shorter races/matches/etc. that it happens in in other games. Like, it'd have to allow the player back in, because if you get a disconnect and replaced by AI 40 minutes in, and that happens to like, two people, suddenly the game is much less fun for the others still involved and it feels like a waste of time.

I mean it would arguably work BETTER here than in a MOBA because you don't have any crazy irreversible decisions you can make. In Heroes of the Storm the AI that replaces you can choose talents that completely change your character while you're gone. You can reconnect to the game and take over for the AI but you might have the completely wrong ultimate attack now because the AI picked the wrong one.

If Mario Party games make it seemless enough you might not even notice that one of the other players has been replaced by an AI. They could also just add a pause button if you're playing with your friends and you don't want the AI to take over.
