And what do you think this is? Do you seriously not see the game being played here?

I'm glad you're here to see it for all of us being that youre very close to Kim Jung Un and seem to know exactly what hes thinking.

darkknight109 posted...
Ask yourself this: why is North Korea doing this? Kim Jong Un has spent the better part of the last decade pouring tonnes of resources into developing nuclear weapons. He's conducted nuclear tests and rocket launches in flagrant violation of previous agreements. He's resisted every sanction thrown at him and even managed to alienate China, North Korea's one real ally. He's rebuffed all previous offers at negotiation, saying that nuclear arms are North Korea's birthright.

Then, in January, he suddenly turns around and says "Just kidding! We'll totally get rid of our nukes, let's have a sit-down chat, shall we?"

The question is why. Why would Kim, after a decade of belligerence and intransigence, suddenly be willing to put on a friendly face and negotiate? It's not like he was forced into it; his regime isn't facing any existential threats, nor had Trump taken an appreciably different tack with him than previous presidents (overly bellicose rhetoric aside), so nothing in that area has changed.

Well, as you said, he has claimed numerous times in the past that hes ready to disarm. But suddenly this time you think it means he's got what he needs to play ball with major world powers? Ha not a chance.

darkknight109 posted...
And it worked. Trump took the bait and, in recognition of the successful summit, China has said they're dropping all their sanctions. Kim got the relief he needed for his country. He'll milk this along for as much as he can (and if he can extract concessions from China and Russia for getting the Americans off of the peninsula, he'll do so) but he has absolutely no reason to give up his nuclear ambitions. After all, consider that America was helping support the overthrow of multiple dictators that gave up their nuclear ambitions (Hussein, Gadaffi) and that Trump just demonstrated that the US is willing to tear up nuclear arms control agreements, entered into in good faith and to which all parties are adhering, simply because the current president doesn't like it. A nuclear agreement with America means nothing these days and Kim would be a fool to trust in it.

This back and forth with sanctions is nothing new either. Dont know why you wanna act like this is all a first with trump on power. darkknight109 posted...
At the cost of basically ceding increasingly dwindling influence in east Asia to China, sure.

Our influence over there is sealed for the distant future because of our economic link with China. That's not going away any time soon.

darkknight109 posted...
And you're not concerned about the military reps who have sounded alarm bells about lack of operational readiness given that the joint military exercises are being halted?

Pardon me for doubting your military knowledge, but I trust their word over yours.

You also left out "an end to sanctions", which is North Korea's far bigger win here.

You don't think it was coincidence that Kim met twice with the Chinese President just before his meeting with Trump, do you?

As I said, this isn't the first "end" of sanctions.

Very well thought out post though. Pretty much all conjecture but still well thought out

"While war games would be canceled, Vice President Mike Pence assured Republican senators that routine military exercises involving American and South Korean troops would continue, said Senator Cory Gardner, Republican of Colorado."

"Mr. McKeon added that it was unclear whether Mr. Trumps order applies only to major war games like Ulchi Freedom Guardian, or a series of other smaller, but important, training maneuvers. It would definitely impact readiness of both American and South Korean forces, he said."

I did find these though. It appears trump has been a little vague about this as well. Anyway, it's the first summit. Maybe there will be more to come where more details can be hashed out

I'm not sure what people are expecting out of attempted negotiations with North Korea.

Do you want the U.S. to just invade North Korea like Vietnam?

Do you want Trump to just pull out a gun and shoot Kim in the head, than have permanent U.S. occupation like in the middle east?

You want Kim to suddenly and completely denounce his ways, give up all his weapons, step down as leader and hold a democratic election?

You want North Korea to bow down and kiss America's feet after 1 talk?

I mean, so far negotiations with North Korea are going about as well as you can expect, as in further talks haven't been refused yet.

Yep, it is a situation in which very few people know what winning looks like, and those who aren't realistic aren't willing to admit that the country isn't giving up its nukes. Building a small nuclear arsenal got them exactly what they wanted, it was a tactic that is now validated.

I have to say that I am very happy that nobody itt is calling for war. Usually people here who have never served are quick to talk about how we need to invade this or "glass" that.

I really doubt Kim has complete control over his country. He's most likely influenced by other interests. Then again, none of us really know the real Kim.

Ben Shapiro also said that this meeting and "agreement" were terrible. He said that he and other conservatives would be destroying Obama had he met with Kim and this was the result.

Trump can reunite the Koreas, and the Left will demand his impeachment for destroying foreign countries.

Doesn't matter what the guy does or doesn't do. The left hates him so much that he'll never get any credit from them. It's predictable and tired. People who aren't totally oblivious and were once on the fence are realizing this and seeing the benefits of this presidency.

Well the same thing happened with obama and the right. We as a nation are pretty divided right now, it's them or us....but there is a middle ground, people just don't want to compromise and can't see things objectively. Everything the right does is evil (even if its a good thing) and anything the left does is evil (even if it is a good thing). I am really neither republican or democratic, I am american.

Not for nothing but right now the US is holding children they ripped away from their immigrant parents in internment camps indefinitely and lost over 1000 in the system with no idea who has them. So maybe we should get off our high horse a bit.

Yes, that does look pretty bad. Maybe it's happening more because Trump didn't have a plan for what to do with the kids when he decided to crack down harder on illegal immigrants, not that that's much of an excuse.

lol Even in irrelevant issues, Trump is to blame with these guys.

Trump being more aggressive would surely lead to kids being sent back with their family more.

Yeah, maybe don't remove the kids from their families if you don't have a plan on what to do with them.. so they can at least stay together.

I didn't even say Trump was solely to blame for this. There are a lot of departments and people to blame for this fiasco. This issue has been culminating for a while.
