the first Pokedex entry that kind of hints at him hurting himself is in Platinum:

The electric sacs in its cheeks are small. If even a little electricity leaks, it becomes shocked

but "shocked" could mean surprised I guess. B/W build on this but also use the word "shocked." Alpha Sapphire goes on to say that if it discharges its electricity involuntarily that it may begin crying, so I think that lends more to the "surprised" theory over "hurt"

Finally, in Sun, you get this entry:

It is not yet skilled at controlling electricity. If you take your eyes off it, it may shock itself.
