I guarantee before year end at least one mega ISP will have throttled a service like Netflix.

The government started regulating it largely because of ISPs blocking/throttling services. We're now essentially just trusting that the ISPs won't do that again. If they collectively choose not to, then things will be fine. I don't see how anyone has that much trust in some ISPs in the US, though.

Giving corporations free will to fuck us and believing them when they say they won't fuck us is such a stupid thing. It's like people don't know how corporations act, this will be a slow burn, a little throttling here and there, stronger monopolies in shit hole towns, they'll do it slowly but surly while pushing the "See! We didn't fuck you! Those liberal fearmongers were lying!" and they'll keep saying it so much that the stupid public will believe it even when facts and data show otherwise that they really are screwing you over until you'll get a public who just throws up their hands and goes "Oh well, what are we going to do, not use the internet?"

Oh, and don't expect Democrats to bring it back or use it as a talking point for their elections once this happens because as soon as they do the chants of GOVERNMENT OVERRREEEACHHHH will hit their crescendo and they'll lose their popular/seats.

There is absolutely nothing the government can or will do to stop corporations especially with this administration and you know what else, not only will they gain more power in November, Trump will be reelected and the Republicans will gain 2 more Supreme court justice picks effectively turning the supreme court into a Hard conservative court that will bow to conservative needs and wants on everything.

We are living in a country of stupid and evil and evil is not only winning they're winning with gusto.

I pay for 200mb/s service and I'm lucky to get 70mb/s average a day. The speed is irrelevant since the only reason I'm paying for the package is because they have a data cap that I kept going over so I paid for unlimited. They're also replacing the data cap again like, next month so I'm just paying for really expensive internet that my ISP isn't even reliably giving to me.

Also, I've noticed places like Reddit and Twitch seem to get throttled hard already but it's not like anyone can do anything about it because if you take them to court they're just going to spend you broke

I don't think anyone is suggesting the government is 100% trustworthy. Given the time it would take for a harmed user or class to have said harm removed in this case, it makes sense to prevent ISPs from doing said thing at all. Especially when there are multiple documented cases of them doing it in the past.

Not sure why you are even responding to fender. I mean only the insane would trust greedy corporations who have shown in the past to fuck with what they say they wont, and paid to get this removed.

Either way, are they providing bad service there in New York? If so, what's stopping a competing company from popping up.

The mega ISPs own the infrastructure.

I might be more inclined to trust the free market solution if there was a consolidated effort to promote competition at the local level. Instead, the large ISPs are quite happy to maintain their sweetheart deals with municipalities to prevent competition from entering the market. Pai, Verizon, et al are quick to let Americans bicker over the pros and cons of government regulation because they know we have little to no power to influence their behavior.

Hell, the ISP I'm with has said they're going to change nothing because they don't want to upset their customers.

1) Multiple areas only have 1 ISP available.
2) Many people work remotely and are required to have internet access for their jobs.
3) It's also cost prohibitive to move to a new ISP if you're locked into a long term contract with your current ISP.

It's not physically impossible to run more cables and install all the stuff that an ISP needs, though, right? So who or what is physically preventing anyone from doing that?

It's not physically impossible, no, but it is extremely cost prohibitive.
