The 10 Commandments List, Short Form

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
2. You shall not make idols.
3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5. Honor your father and your mother.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet.

I can understand if you have a problem with the first one if you don't believe in God, but what about commandments 2-10?

2. Basically, don't put anyone or anything on a pedestal. I.e., don't put some basic bitch you have a crush on up on some pedestal.

3. Don't swear, or, if you do swear, just don't use the Lord's/God's name when you swear. If you're atheist, why would you want to use such swears anyway?

4. Remember to chill on the Sabbath. Everyone needs some down time.

5. Respect your elders.

6. Don't murder peeps.

7. Don't cheat on your wife/husband or have sex with a married chick/dude.

8. Don't be a thief.

9. Don't make up bullshit against another person.

10. Don't playa hate.

Are these such bad laws to live by? Admittedly, I swear all the time IRL.

2, 3, and 4 in addition to 1 would have no bearing at all for atheists. The rest is just basic decency.

Why does God feel like he needs to fucking command people to like him the most? As an omnipotent being he could just be a cool guy and lessen the shittiness of the world and give people good lives and they'd be more likely to worship him. He is actually one of the most pathetic characters ever. If you had someone like God in any other story they would be seen universally as a drooling, wrathful moron.

One through four can all be summed up as dont piss off God. They are utterly useless commandments to an atheist.

Five through ten are about basic morality and generally not being a dick. Those ones are perfectly fine, and should be applied to every day life.

Don't agree, personally. I have a few pagan deities I surround myself with because I find them inspiring and comforting, but I recognize they are more cultural heroes at this point and doubt there is any actual beings out there.

2. You shall not make idols.

Far too ambigious to be useful. What defines an idol? Religious idols? What about statues? Etc.

Plus, I recently made a Thor idol for a shrine I plan to build.

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.

I've heard this one interpreted in multiple ways. It could be talking about the specific name of the Abrahamic God (Jehovah/Yahweh/etc) or just saying God in a statement. If it's the first, I don't really care because it's not a common word outside of my JW family, and if it's the latter, I'm pretty fucking guilty.

Again, way to ambiguous to be useful.

I don't believe in honoring people for simply being born into a certain role. I honor my mother because she's an amazing person who has done wonders for me. I don't honor my father because he's a selfish jerk.

Sure, not sure why this had to be mentioned, though.

What consenting adults do is between them. I don't care, nor do I feel responsible for upholding other people's marriage vows.

8. You shall not steal.

Pretty good guideline, but there are obvious times when it'd be ok.

9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Yeah, this one is good.

10. You shall not covet.

Again, super ambiguous. I also don't believe it is wrong to feel any emotion. The only morality is what you do with it. If you covet something, and then work twice as hard and save responsibly so you can get it, then that's a good thing.

1-4 make no sense to me as a non Christian. The rest make sense and sound like common sense, tho 5 can have major exceptions
