https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/germany-far-right-politician-clothes-stolen-alexander-gauland-thief-nazis-swimming-lake-a8387286.html

A far-right German politician had his clothes stolen while swimming in a lake, with the thief reportedly shouting: This is no swimming area for Nazis.

Alexander Gauland, who is co-leader of Alternative for Germany (AfD), was forced to walk partially-naked through the streets, accompanied by a police officer, after someone absconded with his clothes as he bathed in the waters just outside Berlin.

Ok, this is fair next to humiliate him like this.

referred to the Holocaust, the systematic murdering of six million people throughout Europe, as a speck of birds**t in 1,000 years of glorious German history.

I say this as the Jewish grandchild of a Jewish American WWII veteran that literally fought against the Axis powers

Most German soldiers literally thought they were fighting to protect their country and preserve their way of life. Through the lens of history we can see their side was objectively wrong but the individual German soldier was doing what they thought was right and was willing to die for it. That takes courage.

If you can't understand that context, and that there's a human component to those soldiers you are doing more harm than good.

No different than the opppsing generals of the civil war feeling remorse for fighting their own brothers.

Clear's Disclaimer: I'm not defending the German soldiers that systematically destroyed millions of people in the holocaust, that level of abject dehumanization is a separate topic entirely

most allied soldiers knew the difference in the end.

German regular army and SS were very different monsters. the latter being in charge of the holocaust.

I would say mostly common sense. I'm sure there was probably a large anti-Jewish/other "undesirables" trend in Germany in that period, but your average rank and file soldier isn't going to care much about that. Pretty much anyone involved with concentration camps will likely be a horrible person, but the soldiers out in the field aren't all going to be disgusting demons. That's like saying everybody in the south during the American Civil War were all horrible racists.

Spoiler alert the police are anyways complicit in atrocities like the Holocaust because they uphold the laws of the group in power at the time, if they oppose the government they won't be cops (or oftentimes, alive) very long

It completely goes against how the rise of Nazi Germany actually happened and the reshaping of the German army through conditioning to where they supported horrible things.

Like I said, I don't doubt there was a large social trend throughout the country, but an entire population of over 60 million people aren't all going to radically change. The bulk of them would have to either be tacitly putting up with it because at the end of the day, it is still their homeland, or just ignore the politics behind it completely. I'm sure there were plenty of true, disgusting nazis in the army, but there is no way every single person was a horrible, disgusting monster like portrayed in the media.
