After watching some tournament games of Hearthstone on youtube, while there is some strategy involved with the RNG, I also see a couple of BS where games are won solely because they were given a random card that just so happened to help them out in that particular situation.

I've also heard that LoL also has some RNG in their game (I only read up on it, I haven't played it in like forever), so is RNG good for games and if so how much of it should be in it?

In general RNG has no place in competitive games. However, card games are by their very nature random, and a significant part of deck building is considering the robustness of strategies against bad draws. So for card games it's pretty much fine as the exception.

It is in some shooters, like Battlefield 1, and it doesn't belong in games like that.

For card games and stuff like Pokemon, it works. For shooters, not at all.

Nah, certain RNG elements (like spread) are extremely important to adding depth to shooters.

By that I mean which games, not which mechanics since I agree spread makes sense and is technically RNG.

In competitive games if you do an action 10 times you should get the same outcome 8-9 times. a little RNG is good and makes it interesting.

It would be interesting to add some element of it into competitive games to see how well players can adapt, but it may need to be compensated for somehow. Like, if something goes heavily in favour of one player, there is some form of score multiplier for the other player if they can overcome the disadvantage, proportionate to the size of the disadvantage.

Don't ask me how they'd ever get that to work fairly, but if they could it might lead to some interesting scenarios.

Still RNG. That's different from predictable recoil patterns

sure

I wouldn't say that every game needs it or that adding it to games would improve them, but reacting and adapting to unexpected situations is also a skill and I don't see why it should categorically be excluded from anything competitive. Playing the odds and judging risk/reward is also another skill

though games where the winner can be instantly decided by a moment of bad luck are a bit :/

The devs of Hearthstone back in Beta said that they added a bunch of RNG to the game (outside of the unavoidable draw RNG) because the games were playing out far too similarly and it made the game dull.

Hearthstone also sort of needs RNG to be an exciting "e-sports" game because it requires very little physical skill. You can't have moments like the Chun Li combo clip where someone's dexterity helps them overcome incredible odds. So instead they build excitement by having wacky things happen that can shift the gameplay dramatically.

I think the important thing to determine luck/RNG vs skill in any sort of game is just to see how often the same people are doing well. Hearthstone still requires enough skill that you don't see a constantly changing set of faces at tournaments doing well.

On some level, a game without any RNG whatsoever could ultimately become algorithmic, and algorithmic becomes boring once it is mastered and implemented on a wide scale.

Pokemon based RNG is definitely way too much and is why not even the best players take it that seriously.
