Not the original Second Story, but the PSP re-release that included some new stuff, including Welch as a party member.

I got the PS4 port of it recently, and I was looking up a Trophy guide, and it basically implied that Ashton and Precis were basically not worth getting, and that if I wanna do post-game Cave of Trials stuff, I should have Bowman and Ernest as part of my crew.

The problem is, I kinda like Ashton and Precis. ;_; I was gonna get Welch, Ashton, Precis, Chisato, and Celine as part of my main team. I guess I should probably think about what would make the most powerful team... Is my original plan that sucky of a team, though? Is Bowman really worth sacrificing Precis?

Well, it's not really a remake. But they ported the PSP re-release to PS4, PS4, and Vita. It's only available on the Japanese PSN store, though.

The one thing that bugs me about this is that this means we have SO2, SO3, SO4, and SO5 available on PS4, but not SO1. They didn't port First Departure over. So you can almost have a full collection on PS4... but missing the first game. ;_;

it was my first experience with Star Ocean, it was okay, but First Departure is the only entry I really loved

it sucks how they updated all the portraits to use cleaner art but the sprites are the same as they were on PS1 even if there are noticeable discrepancies between the two now

Bowman is broken in this version.

Ashton lost his button mash/ turbo controller basic attack spam perma-stun 10 second iseria queen solo capability in the remake so he's still okay, but not worth the extra party slot sadly.

Precis can work but I never had success beyond galaxy difficulty.

Also I looked it up and it's JP only, SE never brought it over. Boo.

Full collection if you ignore the GBC sequel to SO2. Basically only existed to verify that yes, the MCs bang and she gets pregnant

You can use whoever you feel like, Ashton is still decent and Precis is actually pretty good. Bowman has stupidly gigantic dps against a single target, but with limited range and it tends to require a different character to land a hit to get the enemy to hold still long enough for him to start spamming his pills. He's good but by no means essential. Opera/Ernest aren't exactly mandatory either unless you want to go with the Bloody Armor shenanigans in which case you need Opera. Ernest's best use is that you can steal stuff from him <_< He's got one legitimately good attack and can get pretty high avoid which is helpful for surviving, but otherwise he's one of the weaker characters.

The big kicker is that they remade the first game then used that system for the remade aspects for the second game on PSP. So to release the one that was made based off the other, well. *cries*

Guess I'll have to make a JP psn account one day for this game.

Yes, you need to recruit Opera to get Ernest. I think it's called Battle Armor, I don't remember the details because I don't like to abuse it but you can pickpocket him in two specific towns (again, I don't remember which, if you go to the message board for the game here and search I'm sure you can find it out easy enough) to get an armor that is normally only available towards the very end of the bonus dungeon.
