I can understand the two drivers of the cars involved being charged, but why was one of the passengers?

Kind of strange. But it looks like it happens. For example:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/hawkes-bay/8938379/Drag-race-passenger-charged

The charges included "aiding, abetting, inciting, counselling, or procuring a person to operate a vehicle in a race which has resulted in death or injury".

Auckland barrister Todd Simmonds said for charges to be laid against the passenger police must have had good evidence they were actively "egging on" the driver.

"They're really saying that that passenger has actively encouraged the driver to do what he or she was doing."

Feel terrible for that father. He just lost everything. I would forgive a guy for killing the three of them in that situation, especially if they get off relatively light.

I'll admit, when I had my Mustang with a Whipple supercharger I raced weekly. The difference was we always went to deserted industrial roads. We never did that shit on city streets, especially residential areas.

We even got caught by police once. They let us off with a warning (about 25 people in 15 cars). I was lined up with an Evo 1 when a half dozen cruisers came at us from both ends of the road.

The female cop talking to me said "were you going to race if we waited 20 more seconds?" There was no point in lying. They ended up giving us a warning and said never to go back there. She told us if it were in the city they'd be towing our cars but because we were where we were they decided to let us off easy (we were only putting ourselves in danger basically).

Kept it to the track after that which ducked because you'd maybe get 3 or 4 runs in 4 hours.

I like that the article isn't written to attack on the kids for causing this accident. No use pouring salt on an open wound. Shame the husband has to go through all this. And this is the reason why when you street race, you do it at the dead of night, 2 AM, with the permission of a police officer.

@MuayThai85

That's much better, and thoughtful of you guys. So cool that the cops let you go.

I have no sympathy for the fuckers who do dangerous shit on Tri-State highways. Especially the Belt Parkway. They are the worst there.

The gut-wrenching agony that husband and father must be enduring. It is likely unbearable. I can imagine the memories that are racing through his mind, and the thoughts of what could have been with his little family, given the opportunity that they were still with him.

I wish we lived in a paradise, where things like this didn't have to happen.

I can understand why people long for a god and an afterlife.

Accomplices are legally just as culpable. It's not any different from saying a getaway driver is guilty of murder of tye people their accomplices killed.

If a homeowner shoots an intruder and the intruder dies the "lookout" can be charged for murder.

It's kind of like The Accused where they went after the men at the bar who, instead of trying to help, egged on the rape.

That part of the law I've never liked as much. It makes sense to hold them liable for what their co-conspirators do, but not what a third-party does to their co-conspirator.
