But seriously, one of the major reasons the current consoles are built on standard PC hardware is to avoid an overly complicated nearly-impossible-to-emulate hardware design like the PS3. If Sony kept AMD for CPU and GPU for PS5, it would be extremely easy to have PS4 backwards compatibility. It's not going to happen for the very obvious reason that you could just borrow a friend's game, download the digital version, then give it back. It's the same reason you have to actually put an Xbox 360 disc in an X1 to play it. The X1 doesn't do anything with the actual disc - it's all digitally downloaded from XBL - but the disc is there to prove you own it. And iTunes is definitely NOT a paragon of digital rights - especially in the Steve Jobs era. Don't forget that the audio files you downloaded on iTunes were encrypted and couldn't be sent to non-Apple devices. The PS3's Cell Processor architecture was so stupidly complex. The Xbox 360, by comparison, was just a PowerPC CPU and a Radeon X1900. The only reason the PS4 isn't bc with PS3 is because the PS3 was such a cluster fuck of an architecture that would be extremely challenging to emulate in even the highest end x86 hardware, let alone PS4 specs. Next gen is pretty much guaranteed to be x86 and simply a newer, faster version of whatever AMD's current APU is at that time, if it's Ryzen or it's successor.
